Tostada con carne

There are lots of layers. It’s your creation honestly but this is how I make mine.

Lay down that tostada.

(Mines on a napkin since I ate at the table and didn’t want to wash a dish 🙃)

Base is steamed potatoes, season to your liking. (Mines simple, just salt) you can also use frijoles instead

Protein (I used carne)

Shredded lettuce or cabbage

Queso fresco

Salsa

And veggie broth (ask for recipe)

The base layer of steamed potatoes is a unique twist that adds a comforting texture and mild flavor, making the dish hearty without overwhelming the palate. For seasoning, a simple sprinkle of salt is often sufficient to enhance the potatoes, but you can also experiment with spices like paprika or cumin for added depth. If you prefer a plant-based option, substituting frijoles (black or pinto beans) instead of potatoes provides a flavorful protein source and keeps the dish vegan-friendly. The protein layer—traditionally carne (meat)—can range from shredded beef, grilled steak, to even chicken or pork, depending on your preferences and what you have on hand. Fresh shredded lettuce or cabbage adds a refreshing crunch that balances the rich protein and soft base. Queso fresco, a crumbly and mild Mexican cheese, lends a creamy texture while keeping the flavors authentic. Salsa is a key component to bring brightness and a little heat; you can use a mild salsa roja, spicy salsa verde, or even a smoky chipotle salsa depending on the level of spice you enjoy. The inclusion of veggie broth is an interesting addition that ties the layers together, adding moisture and subtle flavor that intensifies the whole experience. While the original recipe hints at asking for the broth recipe, many make their own by simmering vegetables and herbs, adding a homemade touch. Finally, serving the tostada on a napkin as mentioned is a clever, eco-friendly way to enjoy this layered dish without extra cleanup. Overall, this simple yet flavorful tostada con carne recipe exemplifies how layering fresh ingredients and balancing textures can elevate traditional Mexican food in your home kitchen. With the flexibility to swap ingredients and seasonings, it caters to all tastes and makes for a delightful meal any day of the week.
