Letters to lovers
I can’t pinpoint the day my love turned into a memory. Could it have been in the bustling city of New York on a thick cloudy day. Where the skyscrapers drowned in murky gray. The streets glistening from a recent rain. Trains rustling in the background, a symphony of car horns, honks and shouts. Laugher and chatter from fleeting company. The sizzle, clatter and clack of kabob charts and sweet popcorn being tosted about. The change in a strangers pockets a faint chime being gluttony and poverty’s cruel temptation. The ever shifting screens mimicking a beauty unattainable. Somewhere in this moment could my love have been smothered? Or was this too cliche could it have been less obvious? Was it somewhere insidious lodge secretly between the thousand “I love you’s” and one day it simply wavered in truth gradually becoming myth. I can recall many days where love wasn’t enough.. will perservious and hope that something would snap into place. That change would be on the horizon yet it never came. Only fleeting promises that always held a return to sender. Stamped by a love doomed to be forgotten.
Love stories often encapsulate the emotions we feel when relationships change. Falling out of love can feel like a gradual withdrawal, where moments of joy turn into memories tinged with sorrow. In bustling cities, these sentiments intensify, as the energy around us contrasts with our internal struggles. The visibility of love can shift, and the transition from deep affection to poignant remembrance can lead to profound realizations. These transitions are not merely sad but also represent a journey of growth. Poetry allows us to articulate these complex emotions, grieving the past while opening ourselves to future possibilities. In capturing fleeting moments, we may discover that love is not solely about the end but also about cherishing what was.
