... Read moreFrom personal experience managing melasma and hyperpigmentation, I've found that integrating dermatologist-recommended products into my routine makes a noticeable difference over time. One key supplement is BioAstin, a potent antioxidant that supports skin health from the inside out. While I initially struggled with taking three soft gels daily due to heartburn, spacing them out helped me tolerate the dosage better. Vitamin C serums can often irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin, but the Vanicream Vitamin C serum—with its ceramides and gentle, free-from harmful additives formulation—is a fantastic option for those who react to typical vitamin C products. Consistency is crucial, and applying this serum daily has contributed to a clearer and more even complexion. SPF is absolutely essential when treating melasma; the key is using a tinted sunscreen containing titanium dioxide. The tint helps prevent further pigment formation by filtering visible light, while titanium dioxide offers broad-spectrum protection. Products like La Roche-Posay's tinted sunscreen and brush-on powders such as Colorescience’s Sunforgettable provide convenient reapplication options that work well for oily skin without clogging pores. Additionally, chemical exfoliation with The Ordinary's high strength BHA peeling solution (30%) can support skin renewal and help reduce melasma's appearance. However, it should be used cautiously—once or twice weekly for about ten minutes—as overuse might cause irritation, especially for oily or sensitive skin types. Planning professional chemical peels, like those performed by specialized dermatologists, can accelerate results but require commitment, such as avoiding makeup for up to two weeks. Combining in-office treatments with diligent at-home care—focused on antioxidants, gentle vitamin C serums, effective sun protection, and exfoliation—has helped me and many others manage melasma challenges effectively. Remember, consistency and protecting your skin from the sun are the foundations to long-term improvement.

The second risk? Pigment that becomes so fixated in the skin it can behave worse than a tattoo. Melasma was never a laser deficiency. You cannot zap away inflammation. You cannot zap away environmental overload. You cannot zap away the signals that created the pigment in the first place.
