Super hot sequel, is it worth it?
After countless hours immersed in SUPERHOT VR, I was always on the lookout for a new game that could deliver that same unique 'time-only-moves-when-you-move' thrill. That's when I stumbled upon Action Hero, a new VR game on Meta Quest that immediately caught my eye with its incredibly similar concept. So, naturally, I had to dive in and see if it could fill the void. The core mechanic of Action Hero is, just like SUPERHOT, a first-person shooter where time only progresses when you move. This creates those intense, strategic moments where every step and shot counts. The game is available across various Meta Quest headsets, including Quest 3, 3S, 2, and Pro, making it accessible to most VR enthusiasts. One of the best ways to experience it yourself is through their free trial, which offers up to 20 minutes of gameplay. You can easily get started by heading to ftg.gg/actionhero. From my personal experience, the free trial is a great way to get a feel for the game, though I did find some aspects a bit less polished than I'd hoped. While the concept is strong, some elements felt like a 'worse version of SUPERHOT,' as hinted at in my initial impressions. The environmental design and enemy encounters, while functional, didn't always provide the same level of satisfaction or challenge. For instance, the OCR mentioned my trial didn't have a 'play-through' and seemed 'silent,' which might point to a less guided or immersive initial experience compared to what I was used to. However, Action Hero does try to offer variety with different game modes. The OCR mentioned 'HEADSHOT GAME MODES,' 'ENDLESS GAME MODE,' and 'OR DON'T DIE PLAYTHROUGHS,' indicating there's more to explore beyond the basic levels. An Endless Mode can be fantastic for pushing your skills and seeing how long you can survive, while Headshot Game Modes could offer a more focused, arcade-style challenge. If you're someone who loves to dominate leaderboards or just wants to practice precision, these modes could extend the game's replayability. Ultimately, while I can't say Action Hero is a 'better game' than SUPERHOT VR, it does offer a similar adrenaline rush for Meta Quest users looking for that specific time-bending FPS experience. If you've exhausted SUPERHOT and crave more of that unique gameplay loop, Action Hero is worth checking out, especially with its free trial. Just go in with an open mind and manage your expectations, and you might find some fun moments in this VR title.
