DIY Potting soil for $0*

This is my potting soil made from repurposed potting soil. Good way to save money is to use what you have.

... Read moreHey plant friends! Have you ever looked at the price of potting soil and thought, 'There has to be a better way?' I certainly have! That's why I'm so excited to share my personal journey and practical tips on how to make your own high-quality potting soil, especially by giving old soil a new lease on life. It's not just about saving money; it's about being resourceful and giving your plants the best possible start without constantly buying new bags. My goal this season, just like many of you, is to truly use what I have. When I first started gardening, I'd toss old soil after a plant died or a season ended. But I quickly learned that even 'failed' soil has potential! My method involves gathering all those old soil blocks from pots where germination didn't quite happen, or transplants that didn't make it, even the soil from failed starters. Don't throw it out! This is your base for a fantastic new mix. Think of it as a treasure hunt in your own garden shed. The crucial first step for me is sanitizing. You might wonder why. Well, old soil can harbor pests, disease spores, or even weed seeds. To ensure a fresh, clean slate for your new plants, I combine all my collected soil and treat it with hot water. The OCR mentioned sanitizing with 185°F water, and that's exactly what I aim for. I pour really hot tap water (or even boil some and add it in) over the entire mixture, ensuring it's thoroughly soaked and steaming. This heat helps kill off any unwanted guests or pathogens, giving me peace of mind when planting delicate seedlings. You'll notice the soil is still warm afterward – that's a good sign! Once the soil has cooled a bit, it's time for the fun part: adding amendments to turn that old dirt into a powerhouse potting mix. This is where you really get to customize your soil to make it ideal for plant growth. I love adding my favorite additives, and these are game-changers: Perlite: This is super important for drainage and aeration. Those little white, lightweight bits prevent your soil from compacting, allowing roots to breathe and preventing waterlogging, which is a common killer of container plants. I usually aim for about 10-20% of the total mix. Sphagnum Moss: The OCR mentioned sphagnum moss. While often associated with orchids, adding some finely shredded sphagnum moss or even a good quality peat moss (if you prefer) can significantly improve your mix's water retention. It acts like a sponge, holding moisture for your plants without making the soil soggy. This means less frequent watering for me, which is a huge plus! Worm Castings: Oh, the magic of worm castings! These are pure gold for your plants. They're essentially worm poop, packed with beneficial microbes and nutrients in a slow-release form. Adding worm castings boosts soil fertility, improves soil structure, and encourages robust, healthy growth. I often add a generous scoop or two per gallon of soil. Slow Release Granules: To give my plants a consistent food supply, especially heavy feeders, I sometimes mix in some slow-release fertilizer granules. This ensures they have a steady diet of nutrients over weeks or even months, reducing the need for frequent liquid feeding. After adding all these wonderful ingredients, it's time to get your hands dirty! I thoroughly mix everything together until it's uniformly blended. You want to make sure the perlite, moss, castings, and granules are evenly distributed throughout your repurposed soil. This ensures every plant in every pot gets the benefit. Honestly, there's such a sense of satisfaction in knowing you've created something valuable from what others might discard. It's empowering to know exactly what's going into your potting mix. So, next time you're about to throw out that old potting soil, remember this method. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and experiment. You'll not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable gardening practice. And before you know it, you'll be starting over with vibrant, healthy plants in your very own custom-made, budget-friendly soil!
