The Broad in LA

The Broad

... Read moreBuilding on my recent visit to The Broad, I wanted to share even more tips and delve into what truly makes this museum a must-see, especially if you're curious about those unique, large-scale installations often described as a 'big furniture museum' experience. When I mentioned going in the morning, I truly meant it – there's something magical about an early start, almost an 'AMORNING AT THE' museum, before the bustling crowds arrive. It allows you to really connect with the art without feeling rushed, offering a more intimate viewing of masterpieces. One of the most talked-about pieces, and what many search for as the 'big table at The Broad museum,' is Robert Therrien’s 'Under the Table.' Walking into the gallery and seeing this monumental sculpture is absolutely breathtaking. It feels like you’ve shrunk down to the size of an ant, exploring a world beneath a giant dining table and chairs. The sheer scale and playful perspective it offers are unforgettable. It’s definitely a highlight and a prime example of the kind of immersive, sometimes whimsical, large-scale art The Broad is known for. It challenges your perception and brings a profound sense of wonder, making you reconsider everyday objects. Beyond 'Under the Table,' The Broad is home to many other incredible large installations that make it feel like an art playground. Think about pieces that fill entire rooms or create their own distinct environments. For instance, Yayoi Kusama’s 'Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away' is another iconic, highly sought-after experience, though it requires a separate reservation once you're inside. While not 'furniture,' its immersive nature contributes to that 'big art' feel. You’ll find works by contemporary giants like Jeff Koons with his gleaming, pop art sculptures, and Takashi Murakami, whose vibrant, large-scale pieces often command significant space and attention, transforming the gallery into a dynamic landscape of contemporary ideas. These aren't just paintings on a wall; they are environments you step into. My morning visit allowed me to take my time with each piece, including some thought-provoking works that seemed to offer 'PALLIATIVE GESTURES' – art that somehow soothes, challenges, or provokes deep reflection. Whether it's the vibrant colors, the intricate details, or the sheer scale, many pieces here resonate on a personal level, leaving a lasting impression. The museum's architecture itself is also a work of art, with its honeycomb-like exterior and natural light filtering through the galleries, enhancing the viewing experience. For anyone planning a visit, I highly recommend booking your free tickets online well in advance, as they often 'sell out' (even though they are free, you need a timed entry). Parking is available underground, but arriving early also helps secure a spot without hassle, especially on weekends. Don't forget to look up their current temporary exhibitions when planning, as they rotate smaller shows alongside their impressive permanent collection. There's also a great gift shop if you want to take a piece of The Broad home with you. Making a full day of it by grabbing lunch at a nearby spot in Downtown LA is a perfect way to round out your art adventure. The Broad isn't just a museum; it's an experience that truly redefines what art can be, especially with its impressive collection of large-scale, thought-provoking works that invite interaction and contemplation.
