Suddenly allergic to all the foods I used to eat…

So about a year ago I became allergic to almost every single food I used to eat on a daily basis. It started out of nowhere with no warning. I ate El Torito’s I remember having the worst stomach cramps and diarrhea of my life. The days that followed I began to experience allergic reactions to foods that I ate on a daily basis. I got hives, eye swelling, throat tightness, and itchy skin. I couldn’t understand what was happening so I made an appointment with an allergist who then tested me for those foods that I ate on a daily along with environmental things. The test came back with the craziest results. I was suddenly allergic to grass, cat hair, cockroaches, everything environmental. Then I looked at the foods that I was tested for and I was allergic to everything I was tested for. I can’t have wheat, soy, eggs, everything that makes food taste good. Has this happened to anyone else? I don’t know what more I can do for myself.

... Read moreIt's truly disorienting when your body suddenly turns on you, especially when it comes to food and things you've lived with your whole life. I completely get how you feel, Cecilia! Experiencing sudden, severe allergic reactions like stomach cramps, hives, eye swelling, and throat tightness to everyday foods and environmental triggers is a terrifying ordeal. Many of us find ourselves asking, "Why am I suddenly allergic to everything?" This phenomenon, often called adult-onset allergies, can stem from various factors that might be worth exploring with your allergist. Sometimes, a severe illness, significant stress, hormonal changes, or even changes in gut microbiome can trigger an immune system overdrive, leading to new sensitivities. It's not uncommon for the body to suddenly identify previously harmless substances as threats, leading to a cascade of reactions, including concerning skin rashes and internal discomfort. Understanding the root cause of skin allergy and other reactions is a crucial step towards finding relief. After seeing those allergy test markings on your arm, it's a lot to process when the results show so many new allergies all at once. For managing food allergies, the first step is strict avoidance. This means becoming a meticulous label reader – wheat, soy, and eggs hide in so many surprising places! Cross-contamination is another big concern, so being mindful when cooking at home and eating out is essential. Always inform restaurant staff about your allergies. Finding safe alternatives can be a journey; for example, exploring gluten-free grains, dairy substitutes, and egg replacers in recipes can open up a new world of possibilities. It’s also wise to wear a medical alert bracelet and carry an EpiPen if recommended by your doctor, especially with throat tightness being a symptom. For environmental allergies like grass, cat hair, and cockroaches, creating a 'safe zone' at home can make a huge difference. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, frequent cleaning, encasing mattresses and pillows in allergen-proof covers, and minimizing carpet can help reduce exposure to common triggers. If you have pets, regular bathing and designating certain areas as pet-free zones might also be beneficial. Dealing with a rash from an unknown source or from a known allergen like pepper, requires quick action. Antihistamines can provide immediate relief for itching and hives, while topical creams can soothe irritated skin. Always consult your doctor for the best ilaj (treatment) for your specific skin allergy type. It’s a tough adjustment, but you are not alone. Connecting with others who share similar experiences, experimenting with allergen-free recipes, and working closely with your healthcare team can help you navigate this new chapter. Remember, managing allergies is an ongoing process, and finding what works best for your body takes time and patience.

Ugh that happened to my father…so I’m slightly concerned this will be me. I’ve noticed a few random issues/allergies I’ve never had in my younger years. Nothing worth going to the dr over yet thankfully

When they tested me they had to put ice packs on my arms because of all the reactions - had allergy shots for seven years - thirty years later now, and am still much better because of those shots
