learning how to drive is not an easy thing

I just started taking driving lessons. (Today was my 4th lesson.) I'm feeling frustrated, because I feel like I can't learn anything while I'm driving - I'm only trying to survive.

I keep drifting into the wrong lane. I can't maintain the appropriate speed. (I'm either going too slow or too fast.) When I look far ahead, I don't really understand what's there, for example the lanes in front, roundabouts, etc. (I wear the right glasses, so that's not the problem.) In a way, I only see cars and traffic signs scattered here and there in front of me, and I can't figure out what's coming next in advance and where do I have to drive etc. I feel like everything happens so fast in the traffic. I should know and do things beforehand, I know that, but when I'm behind the wheel I feel like things are just happening and I can't foresee or control any of it.

I've always wanted to be able to drive, but for financial reasons I couldn't get driving lessons before this. I would like to enjoy driving and actually learn something, but so far I've spent all my energy on being anxious and just surviving behind the wheel. I'm afraid I will never learn how to drive.

I would love to hear tips and if someone has been able to overcome these same challenges. How was your journey learning driving?

... Read moreI totally get how you're feeling right now! That initial driving phase is incredibly overwhelming. It's like your brain is trying to process a million things at once – steering, speed, mirrors, other cars, traffic signs – all while just trying to keep the car on the road! It's normal to feel like you're just 'surviving,' and trust me, you're not alone in feeling that everything happens too fast. Many of us have been there, wondering if we'd ever truly 'get' it. One of the biggest hurdles for me, once I got past the initial panic, was tackling specific maneuvers that felt completely unnatural, like the dreaded two-point turn. It sounds simple: pull past a driveway, back into it, then drive out. But actually doing it smoothly and confidently? That's another story! I remember thinking, 'Is a two-point turn even aceable for me?' It felt like such a complicated dance between clutch, brake, steering, and checking mirrors. My instructor kept reminding me to take it slow, check my mirrors constantly, and use my turn signals. The key, I found, was breaking it down into smaller steps and practicing in a quiet area. Don't rush it! Focus on getting the car straight when backing up, and really look over your shoulder, not just in the rearview mirror. It's all about building that muscle memory and spatial awareness. You'll get there, even if it feels impossible now. Then there are the different driving environments. When you're just starting out, every road feels like a challenge. But understanding the 'three main types of driving environments' – urban, suburban, and rural – can actually help you anticipate what to expect. Urban driving, with its bustling traffic, frequent stops, and complex intersections, requires constant vigilance and quick reactions. Suburban areas often have more residential streets, parked cars, and children playing, demanding lower speeds and increased awareness for unexpected hazards. Rural roads, on the other hand, might have higher speed limits, less traffic, but also unexpected turns, wildlife, and limited street lighting. Each environment calls for a slightly different mindset and set of skills. My instructor always emphasized adapting my speed and observation skills to the environment. For example, in urban settings, I learned to scan much further ahead and check my mirrors more frequently than on a quiet rural road. These are all essential skills you'll need for your DRIVE TEST VERIFICATIONS. It’s not just about knowing the rules; it’s about demonstrating you can apply them safely and confidently in various situations. When I was learning, I kept thinking, 'HOW TO DRIVE effectively and pass this test?' The best advice I got was to practice, practice, practice the specific things that make you nervous, and visualize yourself doing them correctly. Don't be afraid to ask your instructor to go over a two-point turn five times in one lesson if that's what you need. Remember, every experienced driver was once a beginner, feeling exactly what you’re feeling. You’re building a complex skill, and it takes time and patience. Keep pushing through, and soon you'll look back at these struggles and realize how far you've come. You've got this!
