Gladys Alexander's 100th Birthday Celebration
Retired Alachua County educator Gladys Alexander celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday at Greater Bethel AME Church.
She joined Greater Bethel in 1951 and has been a member for 73 years.
Alexander graduated valedictorian from her high school at Madison County Training High School, Madison, FL and continued to pursue a higher education.
She earned a bachelor's degree in English at Florida A&M University; a M. Ed in Speech Pathology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; and a S. Ed. in Administration, Supervision and Curriculum, Secondary education at the University of Miami; and the D. Ed. in Administration, Supervision and Curriculum K-12 at Nova Southeastern University.
She taught English at Mayhaw High School in Blountstown, Florida before relocating to Gainesville Florida in the 1950s.
Alexander developed and directed a county-wide speech therapy program for students and in-service education for teachers in 12 Black Elementary Schools for 12 years.
Alexander was the 11th president for Florida of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. from 1980 to 1984.
Alexander was also one of the charter members who founded the Delta Sigma Theta chapter in Alachua County, making it the first black Greek organization in the county, and helped in establishing the Mu Epsilon chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. at the University of Florida.

She wasn't just teaching English; she was building foundational skills for students, ensuring they had the tools to express themselves and succeed. For 12 years, she led in-service education for teachers across 12 Black Elementary Schools, showing immense leadership and a commitment to educational equity.
