My Favorite 4C Hair Products

I have 4C, high porosity hair. If you do not know what high porosity hair is, that means moisture can easily reach inside the shaft of your hair. However, just as easily as the moisture entered in, it can flow out again. Leading to dry hair, which is a cause of frizzy hair and more prone to hair damage.

I prioritize oils, conditioners, moisturizer, masques, and leave ins to help retain the moisture.

For the washing process, I love using:

Palmer's Coconut Oil Shampoo and Conditioner (these are dedicated to moisturizing the hair, softening it, and coconut oil is great for dry brittle hair). Here and there, I use the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Conditioner (contains biotin) because that product is dedicated more towards hair growth vs. moisturizing. I am trying to also grow my hair out. When it is a major wash day, I will also use the Mielle Rosemary and Mint Hair Masque. Hair Masques are left in longer to seal all moisture in, prevent breakage, and frizz.

After wash products:

For leave in conditioners, I love Palmer's Coconut Oil Leave In Conditioner and Aunt Jackie's Transform Leave In Conditioner. At the end of it all, I will use either the Mielle Rosemary and Mint Scalp & Hair Oil or the Jasmine Hair Oil.

Styling products:

The styling products that work best for me are all Aunt Jackie's products. Depending on the type of curls I want, I will use either the Aunt Jackie's Curl Boss, Don't Shrink (although for me this one flakes, use it sparingly), or Curl La La (My favorite one of all time and does not flake). An Honorable Mention is DooGro. I have used DooGro products since I was a child.

At the end of the day, everyone's hair is different, and you should find what works for you, but do not become a product junkie. Not only do the products you use matter, but also your lifestyle choices and eating habits. I have started to take hair, skin, and nails vitamins to assist in my hair health.

... Read moreHaving 4C high porosity hair is a unique journey, and finding the right products can feel like a never-ending quest. I've been there, constantly battling dryness, frizz, and breakage. My goal was always to keep moisture locked in, and through a lot of trial and error, I've discovered some key principles and products that have truly transformed my hair. When you have high porosity hair, your cuticles are often open, allowing moisture to enter easily but also escape just as quickly. This is why a consistent routine focused on moisture retention is absolutely crucial. Don't just grab any product; look for specific ingredients that cater to this need. For instance, humectants like glycerin and honey can draw moisture from the air into your hair, while heavier oils and butters will help seal it in. I've found that products rich in natural oils like coconut oil, shea butter, and even ingredients like biotin (found in some Palmer's Cocoa Butter Conditioners) are game-changers. Let's talk about the washing process first. I learned early on that harsh shampoos strip my hair of its much-needed moisture. That's why I gravitate towards moisturizing formulas. My go-to, the Palmer's Coconut Oil Shampoo, is fantastic because it cleanses without dehydrating. Paired with a deeply moisturizing conditioner, it sets the stage for a great hair day. For an extra boost, especially when I'm focusing on hair growth, I'll switch to a growth-focused conditioner. And on those really intensive wash days, incorporating a hair masque, like the Mielle Rosemary and Mint Hair Masque, is non-negotiable for me. These masques are designed to penetrate deeply and provide intense hydration, helping to seal those cuticles and prevent breakage. After washing, the layering of products is just as important. High porosity hair needs a good leave-in conditioner to provide a base layer of moisture. I've had great success with Aunt Jackie's Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner because it provides that initial surge of hydration without weighing my hair down. Following up with a good oil is essential to seal everything in. Whether it's the Mielle Rosemary and Mint Scalp & Hair Oil or a heavier oil like Dabur AMLA Hair Oil, these oils create a barrier that helps prevent moisture loss throughout the day. Finally, styling products need to provide hold and definition without causing dryness or flaking. For my 4C coils, I’ve learned that not all stylers are created equal. Aunt Jackie's products have been a consistent winner for me, especially their Curl La La. It gives me great definition and hold, and most importantly, it doesn’t flake. The key is to apply these products to wet or very damp hair to ensure even distribution and to lock in that moisture. It's a journey of understanding your hair's unique needs. Don't be afraid to experiment, but also try not to become a product junkie. Find what works for you, pay attention to ingredients, and remember that healthy hair also comes from within – staying hydrated and nourishing your body with vitamins and a balanced diet makes a huge difference!
