How I press leaves and flowers in clay

We often stop to admire flowers, but the next time you are on a walk or in a garden, make a point to take a close look at the beauty of different leaves. Nature is an amazing artist and each leaf is as unique as a fingerprint or snowflake. I love growing plants and incorporating small bits of them into my ceramic art. I use whatever plants are in season, so my art changes throughout the year as I use what is available.

I press the flowers and leaves into soft ceramic clay. I color the flowers and leaves in the style of watercolor, using ceramic stains and underglazes. Then I glaze the ceramic, firing the pieces in a pottery kiln to over 2200°F. At these temperatures the clay becomes transformed into dense ceramic and the glaze melts into a beautiful shiny layer of glass coating the piece. The gold trim on the edge is real 22 karat gold, also fired in the kiln. The pieces I make are generally small jewelry holders or decorative pieces, designed to hold treasures- I hope they bring you a smile and I hope they feel like small treasures themselves #clay #satisfying #pottery #leaf

... Read morePressing leaves and flowers into clay is a wonderful way to preserve the natural beauty of plants and turn them into lasting works of art. Beyond simply pressing them into the clay surface, artists often select leaves and petals that are relatively flat and dry to avoid cracking or shrinkage during firing. Using ceramic stains and underglazes allows for vibrant, watercolor-like effects that highlight the delicate details and colors of the pressed botanical elements. Once the flowers and leaves are carefully pressed into the soft clay, the piece is glazed to protect the design and add a glossy finish. Kiln firing at temperatures exceeding 2200°F transforms the soft clay into durable ceramic and melts the glaze into a smooth glass coating. This process not only makes the artwork functional and long-lasting but also enhances the colors and textures, bringing out the natural beauty of the leaves and petals. Incorporating real 22 karat gold trim adds a luxurious accent that contrasts beautifully with the organic elements. Firing the gold in the kiln ensures its permanence and shine. These art pieces often serve as small jewelry holders or decorative treasures that connect the wearer to nature, evoking a sense of calm and appreciation for the fleeting beauty found outdoors. For those interested in trying this technique, it’s helpful to experiment with different types of clay bodies and underglaze colors. Using seasonal plants emphasizes the ever-changing inspiration nature provides. Each piece fired three times, as described, ensures depth in color and a high-quality finish. This method offers a satisfying art experience that blends natural elements with ceramic craftsmanship, creating personalized objects that can be cherished for years.
