My CS Time Management System I Used at UCLA

Through lots of undergrad projects at UCLA, some specific tips have helped me really stay on top of my work. Here’s a few you can try:

Break tasks into chunks: Realistic chunking prevents burnout and makes scheduling in sessions for study even easier, especially when you have an otherwise busy schedule.

Buffer time: A good rule of thumb is to add at least 25% to estimated hours needed for an assignment. Particularly when it comes to CS, debugging can take a surprising amount of time.

Daily commits: Small, working changes beat large merges in CS-- the same can be applied to any major, really! Make small steps towards larger goals rather than cramming everything in at once.

... Read moreTime management is crucial for success in any rigorous academic program, especially in fields like computer science (CS) that demand consistent effort and adaptation. At UCLA, students are often faced with numerous projects and tight deadlines, making effective time management an essential skill. One proven technique is breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. This approach not only combats feelings of overwhelm but also allows for more focused and productive study sessions. Additionally, incorporating buffer time—adding an extra 25% to your estimated hours—can greatly assist in managing unexpected challenges, particularly in CS courses where debugging might take longer than anticipated. Another key strategy is the practice of daily commits, a principle borrowed from coding. Instead of cramming, students should aim to make small, consistent improvements. This habit not only enhances understanding over time but also reduces stress leading up to due dates. By implementing these time management strategies, students can navigate their studies more effectively and achieve their academic goals.
