Midterms Survival Guide

It’s officially midterm season (how did it sneak up so quickly?!?)

It’s all too easy to burn out during exam weeks, but taking care of yourself is key to success-- both personally and academically. Here’s some ways I stay balanced during the busiest time of the semester for students.

• Prioritize sleep: All-nighters aren’t worth it (see my other post!!) sleep helps your brain process learnings, so make sure you get enough of it.

• Enjoy nourishing meals: Your body needs fuel to perform at its best, whether that is physically or mentally. Take time to cook for yourself or order a healthy meal.

• Take short breaks: Stepping away from your desk can help reset even when you feel like you’re in the thick of it and boost focus-- take just a few minutes and notice the difference.

Students often overlook the importance of sleep; it is crucial not only for memory retention but also for overall cognitive function. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to help your brain recover from study fatigue. Additionally, ensure you eat well. Incorporating nutritious meals can enhance your focus and energy levels. Preparing healthy snacks or meals can empower you to maintain energy while studying. Moreover, scheduled breaks can significantly improve your productivity. Try the Pomodoro Technique: study for 25 minutes then take a 5-minute break. This approach helps prevent burnout and keeps your mind sharp. Remember to stay hydrated and consider light exercise to keep your spirits up. Simply stretching or stepping outside for fresh air can help clear your mind. Overall, balancing self-care with academic commitments is key to not only surviving but thriving during midterms.
