28 week appointment

Wow, can you believe we're already at 28 weeks? It feels like just yesterday I found out I was pregnant! Every appointment is a mix of nerves and pure excitement, especially knowing I get to check in on my little one. That 28-week appointment is a pretty big one, marking the start of the third trimester and often bringing a few new things to discuss with your doctor. For me, getting to see my 'stinky' (as I lovingly call my baby!) and hear that strong heartbeat is always the highlight. But beyond that heartwarming moment, there's a lot that goes on. Typically, your doctor or midwife will check your blood pressure, weight, and a urine sample – all the usuals to ensure everything's progressing smoothly. They'll also measure your fundal height, which is basically checking if your uterus is growing at the expected rate for your gestational age. It’s a simple way to track baby’s development from the outside! One of the big things that often comes up around this time, and something I was really curious about, is the baby's position. At 28 weeks, your little one still has quite a bit of room to move around in there, so their position can change frequently. My doctor always reassures me that it's still early for them to settle into their final head-down (cephalic) position for birth. Many babies are still breech (bottom-down) or transverse (sideways) at this stage, and that's perfectly normal! They'll usually start monitoring more closely in the coming weeks, but it's good to know what they're looking for. Sometimes, they might even do a quick scan to confirm the position, especially if they have any concerns or if it's been a while since your last ultrasound. It's truly amazing to think about the acrobatics happening inside! And let's talk about those second-trimester symptoms, especially as we wrap up this stage. While some might say the second trimester is the 'golden period,' around 28 weeks, you might start feeling some new or intensifying sensations. I've definitely noticed a bit more fatigue creeping back in, and those Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions!) are becoming more frequent for me. They're usually not painful, just a tightening sensation, and a good reminder that your body is getting ready for the big day. Other common symptoms can include back pain, especially as your belly grows and your center of gravity shifts, and sometimes even a bit of swelling in your ankles or feet. Mood swings can also make a comeback – hello, hormones! It's important to keep an eye on anything that feels off, like sudden severe swelling or persistent headaches, and always chat with your healthcare provider if you're worried. Staying hydrated, taking short walks, and resting when you can are my go-to tips for managing these. As we head into the third trimester, your 28-week appointment might also include discussions about upcoming tests, like the glucose tolerance test (to check for gestational diabetes) if you haven't had it yet, and potentially getting your Tdap vaccine. It’s all part of making sure both you and baby are as healthy as can be for the final stretch. It’s a lot to take in, but every step brings us closer to meeting our little one.
