I got a BAD sunburn lmfaooo but I am so happy to have finally won this year!! (I had to scout for the competition and there wasn’t a single motivated person who WANTED to build a sandcastle lmfao)
Looking back at my recent sand sculpture victory, I'm still buzzing from the excitement – and yes, recovering from a pretty epic sunburn! If you're ever thinking of joining a beach competition, especially in sunny Florida, let me share a few things I learned the hard way (and some I planned for!). First off, the sun is no joke, especially when you're focused on creating a masterpiece for hours. I was so engrossed in our 'game plan' and perfecting the 'outline' of our sculpture, I completely underestimated the Florida sun. My biggest takeaway for anyone spending long hours on the beach, whether you're building an intricate sand sculpture or just enjoying the day, is to reapply sunscreen religiously. I’m talking SPF 50+ every two hours, even if it feels like a chore. Wide-brimmed hats and even rash guards or light long-sleeved shirts can be lifesavers. Staying hydrated is also key – I wish I’d had a cooler packed with more water instead of just focusing on the sand tools! My bad sunburn was definitely the prize I didn't want, even if the '3 day weekend' was amazing. Now, about the sand sculpting itself – it’s way more involved than just piling up sand. The OCR mentions how we had a 'game plan' and 'outline,' and that's crucial. Don't just wing it! My team and I spent time sketching out our idea, deciding on the overall structure, and then delegating the 'detailing'. Having a good base is everything; we learned that from past experiences, like when a giant 'alligator' sculpture I worked on fell apart two years ago. This time, we built a solid foundation. You also need to be ready for anything, even potential 'sabotage'! We had a good laugh about it, but it’s a reminder that these competitions can get competitive. The best part? The sheer joy of seeing your vision come to life. From shaping the initial forms to adding those intricate final touches – like the 'booty' detail that got a chuckle from the judges – every step is rewarding. And then, the bittersweet moment of 'destruction'. It's hard to see your hard work go, but it's also part of the fun, especially when you get to 'destroy' it in a memorable way! 'R.I.P el mako' indeed. So, if you're eyeing a sand sculpture competition in Florida, go for it! Just remember to come with a plan, a good team, and most importantly, an arsenal of sun protection. You want to remember your victory, not your sunburn!
