Ripe by Sarah Rose Etter 🥀

🥀 I’m a sucker for a good literary fiction book. This one has been popular on #booktok and is on so many “WTF did I just read” lists, so obviously I had to snag it from my local library.

I rated it 3.75/5 stars only because of the ending. There are some elements in the book I would’ve loved the author to expand on more, and the ending was a big WTF moment for me.

Have you read this book?

... Read moreSo many of you asked for more thoughts on 'Ripe' by Sarah Rose Etter after my initial review, and I'm so excited to dive deeper into what makes this literary fiction novel such a compelling — and often unsettling — read! It truly is one of those books that sticks with you long after you've turned the final page, living up to its reputation on #BookTok for being a 'WTF did I just read' experience. One of the first things that struck me, even before opening the book, was its striking cover with that vivid, almost ominous, pomegranate-like imagery. It perfectly sets the tone for a story that feels both beautiful and a little bit dangerous, much like the themes explored within. The original article mentioned my 3.75/5 rating, and while I stand by it (mostly because I craved more elaboration on certain plot points!), the book's brilliance truly lies in its philosophical depth. The quotes I highlighted earlier really resonate here. For instance, the idea that 'maybe there must always be two of us—our real selves and the ones we create to survive in the world as it is' is a central thread. It explores the burden of expectation, the masks we wear, and the internal struggle to reconcile our authentic selves with the versions we present to the world. Sarah Rose Etter masterfully dissects this dichotomy through the protagonist, who grapples with her identity and purpose in a world that often feels indifferent. Another powerful aspect is the commentary on societal disparities. The quote about 'wild amounts of wealth brush up against extreme poverty' hits hard. The narrative touches on corporate greed, the anxieties of modern life, and the feeling of being a small cog in a giant, sometimes dehumanizing, machine. It's a poignant exploration of displacement and the constant pressure to perform, even when you feel like you're falling apart. The book also delves into the perception of life itself. That quote, 'When you're young, every part of life seems big and monumental. Once older, you can see it for what it is: smaller pieces of a larger game,' really made me pause. It makes you reflect on how our perspectives shift with age and experience, and how sometimes what seemed monumental in youth can feel insignificant later, yet each small choice still shapes who we become. This ties into the 'life splits like a snake's tongue' quote, highlighting the continuous stream of choices that define our path. While the ending was a true head-scratcher for me—a moment that left me staring blankly at the page, wondering what I had just consumed—it undeniably adds to the book's mystique. It's an ending that demands discussion, forcing you to reconsider everything you thought you knew. It's not a neatly tied-up conclusion, but rather an invitation to ponder, analyze, and perhaps even argue with fellow readers. And honestly, that's what makes it such a great book club pick! If you're into dark literary fiction that challenges your perceptions, makes you think deeply, and isn't afraid to leave you with more questions than answers, then 'Ripe' is definitely worth picking up. Just be prepared for a journey that's as thought-provoking as it is unforgettable.
