Over consumption?

Something I don’t understand is over consumption. I like to smell good and look clean ofc! But why do I need 6 different body washes to do so? 4 types of lotion and 10 body scrubs? I understand stocking to save for future purposes but some things are genuinely just out of control! I think there’s a thin line between the saving and over consuming. If I’m buying with intention of not opening until I’ve ran out, I’m saving. If I’m buying with the intention of using each one whenever I feel like It, im over consuming. I personally do not think it’s necessary and I hate the look its things everywhere for no reason at all. But everyone’s different and can use their money on whatever they’d like. I just can’t understand buying every single scent variation just bc it’s a new scent. Buying just to buy is not something I can necessarily get. *no shade to the girls!*

But then there are the reality checks, like the images of multi-shelf cabinets overflowing with products, or a bathroom counter and tiered shelf absolutely jumbled with cleansers, shampoos, facial masks, and every type of personal hygiene item imaginable. It makes me question: when does a love for beauty products turn into something less intentional? For me, the line between 'collecting' and 'overconsuming' isn't always clear, but it's an important one to consider. Collecting, in my eyes, can be a joyful hobby. You might have a curated selection of products you genuinely love, perhaps a few backups of absolute holy grails, or a small variety to suit different moods or needs. You’re intentional about each purchase, and you use what you have. It’s about appreciating the items you own. Overconsumption, however, feels different. It's when those body washes multiply without a clear purpose, or you find yourself buying yet another 'new scent' of lotion even though you have five unopened ones at home. It’s that feeling of being overwhelmed by choice, or finding expired products because you simply couldn't get through them all. I’ve definitely been there, staring at a jumbled pile of diverse beauty products and thinking, "Do I really need all of this?" So, what drives us to accumulate so much? I think part of it is the sheer joy of discovery. New products are exciting! There’s also the influence of marketing, social media trends, and the constant push to 'treat yourself.' Sometimes it’s a desire for self-care, where buying a new scrub or facial cleanser feels like an act of kindness to ourselves, even if we already have twenty. And let's be honest, sales. Who can resist a good deal on their favorite personal care products? But for me, the true cost isn't just financial. It's the visual clutter that can make a space feel less peaceful. It's the mental load of managing so many options. It's also the potential waste if products expire before they’re used, or if I end up disliking something and it just sits there. I've started asking myself a few questions before making a new purchase: Do I genuinely need this, or am I just tempted by the 'newness' or a sale? Do I have something similar already? Can I use that up first? Where will I store this? Do I have the space without creating more clutter on my bathroom counter or in my cabinet? What's my intention for this product? Will I use it regularly, or will it just add to the collection? It's a journey, and I'm certainly not perfect, but being more mindful about my personal care products has helped me appreciate what I have and make more intentional choices. It's about finding that sweet spot where you have enough to enjoy, but not so much that it becomes a burden. What are your thoughts on drawing this line?
