Is keeping a smile unprofessional?

Working remotely means my camera’s always on, I mute unless I talk like everyone else. But my boss just dropped feedback, I “smile and laugh too much”. We had a 1:1 where I mentioned struggling to chime in during a meeting, I held my hand up both IRL and on screen for 10+ minutes! He said I “hesitated too much”… then hit me with the smiling thing. I clarified I wasn’t chatting with anyone if I ever glance away, it’s just urgent work messages!

I even said he was assuming a lot from my face, and he admitted it… but still stuck to his point.

I tried to think how to “fix” it, but I’m a super emotive person, and my smiling/laughing is tied to my anxiety. I’m always taking notes, engaged, and usually one of the top contributors. Now I’ll force a “serious face,” but it’ll just make me more anxious and less likely to speak up.

Between this and other little things, my resume’s already updated. Has anyone ever gotten called out for a “flaw” that’s just… Felt like I was going crazy for being annoyed here
