My bdays lowkey break my heart every year
My birthday’s coming up soon and I already hate it. I always build it up in my head like this year I’ll feel so loved. People will remember, maybe plan something small. But every single time, it ends up reminding me how nobody really cares enough to remember.
Like, my family, they’ve missed my birthday 3 years in a row now. My mom once asked me what’s up this weekend on my actual birthday and I was like… “It’s my birthday, mom.” And I'll drop hints to my friends like “Oh hey, next week’s my birthday!” and they’ll go “Cool!” Last year, I spent my birthday alone eating takeout while scrolling through Instagram seeing everyone else’s happy birthday posts. I had this stupid hope that someone\anyone would text me.
Am I crazy for wanting that? Does anyone else go through this? I just feel I'm not loved...
Birthdays often come with high expectations that can leave us feeling deeply hurt when those hopes aren't met. The feeling of being overlooked or forgotten on your special day is more common than many realize. It’s important to remember that experiencing birthday blues doesn’t mean you’re alone or unloved—it reflects the universal human need for acknowledgment and connection. Many people face similar struggles, especially when life’s pace and relationships shift over time. Family members might unintentionally forget dates, and friends may not express their care in ways we expect. Social media can amplify feelings of isolation as we see others’ celebrations while we quietly experience disappointment. One practical way to cope is by setting your own birthday traditions that bring you joy regardless of others' involvement. This could be treating yourself to a favorite meal, engaging in a hobby you love, or even volunteering—a fulfilling way to connect with others. Communicating your feelings honestly with close friends or family can also nurture deeper understanding and support. Sometimes, people don’t realize how much their acknowledgment matters until it’s shared openly. Self-compassion is key. Reflecting on your intrinsic worth beyond others’ recognition helps build resilience. Remember, your feelings are valid, and seeking meaningful connections—whether in person or online communities—can help turn birthday blues into moments of self-discovery and growth. If birthday sadness feels overwhelming or persistent, talking to a mental health professional might provide helpful strategies to manage emotions and build a more positive outlook for future birthdays. You deserve to feel loved and celebrated every day, especially on your birthday.

I saw my niece by marriage light her own birthday candles, and that definitely stuck. Since she had her whole family around her extended family, and she still had to light her own candles…. Stay lit!
