Is Lupus to blame?

I watched Selena Gomez’s new music video last night, and I was blown away by how different her face looks, totally caught me off guard.

So is it because of lupus since 2015? From what I know, the meds she takes for it like glucocorticoids have wild side effects. Sometimes they make your face puff up (that “moon face” people talk about), and when doses shift, it can swing the other way, leaving cheeks sunken or features sharpened .

And it sucks people jump to “botched” before thinking about her health. She even had a kidney transplant from it! So is this just another effect of her lupus battle? Have you noticed how chronic illness meds can change someone’s look and how quick we are to judge instead of ask?

... Read moreSelena Gomez’s recent change in appearance sparked a lot of conversation online, and it’s a great moment to explore how chronic illnesses like lupus and their treatments impact physical looks. Lupus, an autoimmune disease, affects people in many ways, and the medications prescribed to manage symptoms—especially glucocorticoids—can cause noticeable facial changes. For example, glucocorticoids may cause a side effect known as “moon face,” where the face appears swollen or puffed due to fluid retention. Conversely, adjusting medication doses can lead to sunken cheeks or sharper facial features. It’s important to recognize that these changes are part of the medical journey for individuals fighting chronic illnesses. Beyond the physical manifestations, some have undergone serious medical procedures such as kidney transplants, like Selena did, indicative of the severe impact lupus can have on health. Unfortunately, public assumptions often jump to cosmetic procedures or “botched” surgery when seeing a different look, which can be unfair and dismissive. This highlights a broader societal issue: the quickness to judge based on appearance instead of seeking to understand the underlying health realities. Many people managing chronic illnesses face similar challenges. Their medications, while lifesaving, can affect how they look, sometimes impacting self-esteem as well. Raising awareness about these realities can foster empathy and reduce stigma. When noticing someone's changing appearance, it’s valuable to consider possible health-related reasons. Ultimately, Selena’s story shines a light on the complexity behind external appearance changes and reminds us to approach such conversations with kindness and an open mind. Chronic illness is often invisible but very real—and how it affects a person deserves thoughtful recognition rather than snap judgments.

Unless people have ever experience lupus, they have no room to talk, or having to have a kidney transplant and beyond heavy medication, the rest of their life. Luckily Selena has Benny. He cooks her exactly what she needs, and the outcome has changed her. They’re both living their best lives ever.❤️

Could it be lupus? What to know BEFORE you see a doctor
You’ve been tired for way too long. Your joints hurt. You feel off. You’ve gone to the doctor… and left with no real answers. Here’s the thing: Lupus can be sneaky. It mimics other conditions and hides behind vague symptoms. And many people (especially women) go years without a diagnosis.
