Life lessons by books and food

2024/6/10 Edited to

... Read moreIt's fascinating how a simple phrase like 'edible economics' can spark so many thoughts, isn't it? For me, it's not just about a specific book, though I appreciate the idea of finding profound insights in our daily culinary world. It's become a personal philosophy, a way of looking at how the food we prepare and consume directly connects to our life lessons, our well-being, and even our family's future. When I'm in the kitchen, whether I'm lovingly preparing 'pork ribs on the smoker' or whipping up a vibrant 'Nam phrik' with fresh herbs, I often reflect on the 'economics' of it all. It’s not just about the monetary cost, but the value of time, effort, and nourishment. Choosing the right 'seasoning' – whether it’s Lawry's Garlic Salt or McCormick Lemon Pepper Seasoning, as I often do – feels like a small decision with a big impact on the final dish and our enjoyment. There’s an inherent wisdom in making the most of what you have, a practical skill that extends far beyond the pantry. I think about how these culinary acts teach my kids, too. As I jot down 'Journal Life lessons' in my notebook, I often include observations about how 'your kids watching your life' learn from our habits. Sharing homemade meals, understanding where ingredients come from, and even the simple act of planning meals for the week, are all forms of 'edible economics' in action. It's about sustainability in its broadest sense: sustaining our bodies, our families, and our resources. Beyond the kitchen, books have always been a source of wisdom for me, much like the timeless teachings in 'Tao te ching' that my husband cherishes. They offer different perspectives on life's 'economy' – not just money, but the economy of emotions, relationships, and personal growth. My 'study bag' with my writing essentials, which used to be a skincare bag, is a reminder that investing in my mind and creativity is just as crucial as investing in healthy food. The beautiful thing about this 'edible economics' mindset is that it encourages us to find value and lessons everywhere. From planning a wholesome meal to journaling our thoughts, every choice we make about what we consume – be it food or knowledge – contributes to the richness of our lives. It’s about building a 'healthy lifestyle' not just for 2024, but for the long run, one mindful bite and thoughtful page at a time. It truly makes you appreciate the full circle of life, books, and food.
