Have you ever looked at something in your home and thought… this has potential, but it needs something? 👀✨
That was this fireplace.
When my daughter and her husband bought their first home, they were SO excited about the wood-burning fireplace 🔥🪵 🧡 but let’s be honest… it wasn’t giving the vibe they were hoping for 😐
So my hubs and I jumped in to help. 💪🏼
We painted the brick using Valspar (matte finish) from Lowe’s, color-matched to “Black Panther” and the second the paint hit the brick, the entire space changed. That perfect black instantly elevated the room 🖤✨🖤
But we weren’t done yet… it needed warmth and contrast. Enter: a wood mantle!!!!
“We” built it … meaning he built it and I took pictures 😅
We stained it with Minwax Early American, and WOW. The difference was unreal 😍
I’m obsessed with how it turned out!!!
So yes!!! If you have an all brick mantle like they did… just wrap it with wood!!

Painting brick is a game-changer: using a matte black like Valspar’s "Black Panther" instantly modernizes the space, creating a sleek background that draws attention without overwhelming. In my experience, matte finishes hide imperfections in brick better than gloss, giving your fireplace a smooth, contemporary feel.
Adding a wooden mantle is where the magic really happens. Wrapping the brick with stained wood introduces natural textures and warmth, contrasting beautifully with the dark paint. We chose Minwax Early American stain because it offers a rich, warm tone that complements both modern and rustic décor. Building the mantle yourself can be quite rewarding and allows for customization to fit your style and space.
Don’t underestimate the power of simple DIY projects like this. They can dramatically increase your home's ambiance without breaking the bank. Plus, shopping at stores like Lowe’s makes it easy to find quality supplies that fit your project needs. Overall, this makeover completely revitalized the room, making the fireplace the heart of the home. If you’re looking to bring new life to your fireplace, painting the brick and adding a wood mantle is a straightforward, impactful solution you can tackle yourself.
