How to take the train in Italy 🚆🇮🇹
• Arrive at the station
• Purchase your ticket if you don’t already have one
• Check the Departures Board (Partenze in Italian)
– Find your destination — there may be multiple trains going there
– Match the correct train number with the correct departure time
– Follow that row all the way to the right to find Binario (often shortened to Bin), which is your platform number
– If no platform is listed yet, you’re just early — wait for it to be posted
• Head to your platform
– You may need to go downstairs or take an elevator (not all stations have elevators, so plan accordingly)
• Look for a ticket validation machine and validate your ticket
– Keep your ticket handy to show the ticket inspectors on board
• When the train arrives, double-check that you’re boarding the correct train and on the correct side of the platform
• Pay attention to the stops if your destination is not the final stop
• When you exit the train, follow signs to leave the station
– You may need to go downstairs again to reach the main level
– Look for “Uscita” — that’s Exit in Italian
Congrats! You’ve just taken the train in Italy. Brava! 👏
