My adventure to Tianchi Lake, or Heavenly Lake, nestled high in the Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang, truly left me speechless. If you're planning on traveling to Xinjiang, this natural wonder is an absolute must-see. When I first searched for information about Tianchi Lake, I was captivated by images, but nothing prepared me for the sheer scale and tranquility of the place in person. Many of you might be wondering, what exactly makes Tianchi Lake so special, beyond just its stunning blue waters? Well, for starters, it's steeped in legend. Local folklore often speaks of it being the dwelling place of the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu), an important goddess in Taoist mythology. This mystical aura, combined with the towering snow-capped peaks of the Tianshan range reflecting in its pristine surface, creates an unforgettable landscape. During my visit, I discovered there's so much more to do than just admire the view. I highly recommend taking one of the boat trips across the lake. It offers a different perspective of the surrounding mountains and forests, allowing you to truly appreciate the vastness of the area. There are also several hiking trails around the lake, suitable for various fitness levels. I particularly enjoyed a leisurely walk through the pine forests, breathing in the crisp mountain air. For those interested in cultural insights, there are yurt accommodations and small villages nearby where you can experience the local Kazakh culture, which adds another rich layer to your travel to Xinjiang experience. Thinking about the best time to visit? I found that late spring to early autumn (May to October) offers the most pleasant weather, with lush greenery in summer and vibrant autumn colors. Winter brings a completely different, snow-covered fairytale landscape, but it can be very cold. Getting to Tianchi Lake is relatively straightforward. Most visitors travel from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. You can take a public bus from the Urumqi People's Park or a shared minivan/taxi. The journey itself offers beautiful views of the changing landscape as you ascend towards the mountains. Once you arrive at the entrance, there's a shuttle bus system that takes you up to the lake itself, making it very accessible. A few practical tips for your visit: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you'll likely be doing a fair bit of walking. Dress in layers, as mountain weather can change quickly. Don't forget your camera – every turn offers a postcard-perfect shot! While there are food stalls and small restaurants near the lake, I'd suggest packing some snacks and water, especially if you plan on hiking. The entrance fee covers access to the scenic area, and there are additional costs for boat rides or cable cars, but every penny is worth it for the unforgettable memories you'll create at Tianchi Lake. This truly was a highlight of my travel through China's incredible Xinjiang region.
