This ancient town, often referred to as Chongqing Old City, is truly a living museum, offering a captivating glimpse into traditional Chinese culture and architecture. Walking through Ciqikou's narrow, stone-paved streets, I felt like I'd stepped back centuries. The traditional buildings, many with intricate wooden carvings and iconic red lanterns, create an atmosphere that's both charming and nostalgic. It's not just about the old structures; the town is alive with local artisans demonstrating their crafts, from intricate sugar painting and dough sculpting to handmade pottery and traditional fabric dyeing. I particularly loved watching a mini tea ceremony in one of the quaint tea houses – a perfect way to experience local customs and take a relaxing break from exploring. The storytelling from the locals truly enhanced the feeling of travelling through time. And let's talk about the food! Ciqikou Ancient Town is a veritable paradise for foodies. You absolutely must try the local Chongqing street snacks. From fiery spicy hotpot skewers and savory 'Maocai' (a solo hotpot experience) to crispy fried dough twists, sticky rice cakes, and the famous 'Ciqikou twist' (麻花 - mahua), there’s an endless array of delicious bites. I even stumbled upon a fantastic "私房菜" (sīfángcài) or private kitchen, serving authentic home-style dishes with recipes passed down through generations. The flavors were incredibly rich and truly unique – a perfect match for my adventurous palate! What makes Ciqikou truly special, beyond its historical charm, is its stunning natural setting. With '有山有水' (yǒu shān yǒu shuǐ – meaning it has mountains and water), the town offers picturesque views, especially if you climb to some of the higher points along the winding paths. The Jialing River flowing nearby adds to the serene yet bustling ambiance, reflecting the ancient structures and the vibrant life. It's a place where history, culture, and nature beautifully converge, making every photo opportunity Instagram-worthy. If you're planning a visit to Chongqing, I highly recommend dedicating at least half a day, or even a full day, to Ciqikou Ancient Town. To avoid the biggest crowds and truly soak in the tranquil morning atmosphere, try to go on a weekday morning. You can easily reach it by Chongqing metro Line 1, exiting at Ciqikou station, making it a convenient stop on your itinerary. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes because you'll want to explore every corner – from the old temples to the bustling market stalls! This ancient town is more than just a tourist spot; it's an immersive experience that leaves you with a deeper appreciation for China's rich heritage and the unique spirit of Chongqing.
