💜 What Bella Taught Me About Communication This Week

This week changed the way I look at autism, communication, and even motherhood.

For years, I thought communication meant words.

But Bella has been teaching me that communication can look like so much more:

💜 Comfort items

💜 Movements

💜 Routines

💜 Choices

💜 Excitement

💜 The little moments most people miss

The biggest lesson?

Sometimes what we call “behavior” is actually communication.

This week wraps up our first series:

✨ What Bella May Be Trying To Communicate ✨

And honestly, the biggest breakthrough wasn’t Bella changing.

It was me learning how to listen differently.

Tonight we’re wrapping up the series and next week we’ll begin a new journey:

💜 The Language Beyond Words 💜

Learning her world one day at a time. 🌸

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, one of the most profound shifts in understanding autism communication comes from patience and close observation. Bella's story really highlights how gestures, routines, and even subtle movements serve as her language. For many parents of nonverbal children on the spectrum, recognizing these cues is transformative. I remember learning to interpret my child’s comfort items and the specific routines they preferred. These weren’t just habits but vital elements of communication that helped regulate their emotions and express needs. Paying attention to excitement or choices they make reinforced that communication goes far beyond spoken words. Moreover, this way of listening and watching can also reduce frustration for both parent and child. When we stop labeling behaviors as 'difficult' and start seeing them as attempts to communicate, it changes our whole approach to support. It encourages creating a supportive environment that validates their world. It’s important to share these insights with others in the autism community because every child, like Bella, teaches us new things about connection and understanding. Embracing neurodiversity through this lens deepens empathy and strengthens relationships. I’ve found that community hashtags such as #AutismAcceptance and #NonverbalAutism help connect parents and caregivers who are navigating similar journeys. Together, we learn that communication is as unique as the individual, and listening differently can open doors to richer interactions.
