💜 Now I Understand She Was Communicating

For years, I thought Bella was just pulling people around, leading them places, or wanting things done for her.

Now I understand she was communicating.

When she grabbed someone’s hand and brought them to something, she was communicating.

When she led someone across the room, she was communicating.

When she kept trying to get our attention, she was communicating.

The words weren’t there yet, but the message was.

I spent years waiting to hear communication.

Now I realize I was already seeing it.

I just didn’t understand what Bella was trying to say.

Just like Bella’s gestures—leading someone to a place or persistently seeking attention—often convey urgent needs or feelings that words might not express at the moment. I used to focus exclusively on verbal communication, waiting for clear words before I felt I could respond meaningfully. However, once I started paying attention to the small actions and behaviors, I realized how much was being communicated silently. It’s essential to observe these cues with an open mind and patience, and to respond with empathy. For example, when someone grabs your hand and leads you somewhere repeatedly, it could mean they want to share something important, feel anxious, or seek comfort. Instead of dismissing such gestures, try to consider what their needs might be and how you can support them better. Learning to interpret nonverbal signals takes time, especially if the person struggles with traditional speech. But this process fosters deeper understanding and can unlock more meaningful interactions. This lesson applies not only to children or individuals with communication challenges but also in everyday relationships. Paying attention to those 'little things'—like subtle actions or repeated attempts at getting your attention—can reveal much about what’s really being communicated. Ultimately, this approach encourages us to be more present, observant, and sensitive. It reminds me that communication is not just about words but about connection, intention, and care expressed in many forms.
