💜 Why The Little Things Matter.
💜 WEEK 4: THINGS ARE UNDERSTOOD DIFFERENTLY NOW
For a long time, I thought Bella’s comfort items were just things.
A favorite drink.
A Minnie.
A toothbrush.
The same objects.
The same little habits.
Now I understand they mattered.
What looked small to me was helping her feel safe.
What looked repetitive was helping her predict what came next.
What looked like attachment was often comfort.
The older I get, the more I realize those “little things” were serving a very important purpose.
They weren’t random.
They were helping Bella regulate, feel secure, and make sense of the world around her.

Now I Understand She Was Showing Me Something.

From my own experience, I've learned that the little things that might seem insignificant to others often carry profound meaning and purpose, especially when it comes to supporting someone with autism. Items like a favorite stuffed animal, a specific drink, or a comforting routine aren’t just habits—they’re vital tools for emotional regulation and creating a sense of safety. I remember witnessing how a repeated routine or a preferred object helped reduce anxiety during overwhelming moments. This consistency builds predictability, which can be a grounding force amid a chaotic or unpredictable environment. Recognizing and respecting these comfort items is more than just accommodating preferences—it’s acknowledging their role in helping a person navigate their world. Many times, what may appear as attachment or fixation is actually a form of self-soothing or communication that speaks volumes about what the individual needs. Embracing this perspective opens up greater empathy and patience, allowing caregivers and loved ones to connect more deeply. This understanding transforms small habits from mere quirks into meaningful expressions of safety and comfort. Understanding these 'little things' is a continuous journey that enriches our approach to autism acceptance and support. Each comfort item or routine is a piece of the puzzle—helping foster security, predictability, and emotional balance. Sharing this insight with others can lead to a more compassionate and informed community for those navigating autism and related experiences.
