You See the Joy, But Not What Came First 💜

You see the joy, but you don’t always see what it took to get there. 💜

With Bella, an ordinary outing can include a lot of little moments that happen before she’s ready to settle in and enjoy herself.

Sometimes she needs my hand. Sometimes she needs Minnie close by. Sometimes she just needs time to take everything in.

And then I see the shift.

She settles in, finds her own rhythm, and starts enjoying the experience in the way that feels right for her.

I’m learning that supporting Bella isn’t about rushing her. It’s knowing when to guide, when to wait, and when she’s ready to take it from there.

... Read moreSupporting a child with autism like Bella truly requires a deep well of patience and empathy. From my experience, the path to joyful moments often begins with understanding that every child’s journey is unique and filled with small but significant steps. Bella’s story highlights how important it is to allow her the time to process her surroundings and feel secure before she can fully engage. In practical terms, this means being present and attentive to what the child needs at each moment—sometimes it’s just offering a reassuring hand, other times it’s the comforting presence of a familiar companion, like Bella’s friend Minnie. These seemingly small supports help create a safe space where the child can gradually explore and connect with their environment at their own pace. One key insight is resisting the urge to rush or force progression. Instead, it’s about knowing when to gently guide and when to step back and let the child lead. This balance helps build their confidence and allows them to find their individual rhythm, which is crucial for their overall comfort and enjoyment. Moreover, I’ve learned that each child with autism has a distinct and vibrant personality that deserves recognition and celebration. Embracing these differences enriches the experience for both the child and those supporting them. If you’re supporting a child with autism, consider focusing on the process rather than just the outcomes. Celebrate the small victories and cherish the moments when the child truly settles in and enjoys themselves. It’s these moments that reflect genuine growth and blossoming independence. Remember, behind every joyful smile is a story of effort, understanding, and unwavering support—just like Bella’s journey to finding where she feels most at ease and happy.
