“Misunderstood” my version of Elphaba

I'm so excited to share my latest art piece: a stylized painting of Elphaba, the iconic green-skinned witch from Wicked! For this project, I really wanted to dive deep into her character and present my own interpretation. You can see in the painting, I focused on her distinctive features: the emerald green skin that sets her apart, those striking red eyes that seem to hold so much untold story, and her bold red lips. I even imagined her with a dark, wide-brimmed hat, adorned with vibrant red poppies, giving her a regal yet mysterious aura. It was a joy bringing this vision to life, carefully blending colors to get that perfect shade of green for her skin. One of the most fascinating aspects of Elphaba is, of course, why she's green. In Gregory Maguire's novel, it's hinted at being a birth defect, perhaps from a potion her mother was given. In the musical, it's more of a mysterious, inherent trait that makes her an outsider from birth. This concept of being inherently different, and often misunderstood because of it, truly resonates with me and was a huge inspiration for this piece. I wanted her eyes to convey that depth – the strength, the pain, and the resilience of someone who doesn't fit in but still finds her power. Many of you might wonder about the 'meaning of Elphaba' or what her character symbolizes. To me, she represents defiance, empowerment, and the fight against injustice. She's not just the 'Wicked Witch of the West' but a complex woman who challenges societal norms and fights for what she believes is right, even if it means being ostracized. Her green skin becomes a symbol of her uniqueness and her power, rather than a curse. When I paint her, I think about her journey and how she evolves from a shy, intelligent girl into a formidable force. Creating this illustration allowed me to explore those layers. I really enjoyed capturing the details, like her hand gently touching her chin, hinting at her thoughtful and often brooding nature against a dark background that makes her vibrant features pop. Whether you're a fan of the Wicked novel or the Broadway musical, Elphaba continues to inspire artists and audiences alike. Her story reminds us to look beyond appearances and to question narratives imposed upon us. I hope this painting gives you a new 'vibe' of Elphaba and encourages you to appreciate the depth of this truly unforgettable character.
