First craft show for the books!

My first craft show! Here's what I learned:

1. Will it be nerve wrecking? Yes. Will it be worth it? 100% Yes.

2. Audience is key. Who is going to show up? Will they be interested in your product? What are they willing to spend? I found church craft shows might not be my audience and I'm eager to try a festival, large yard sales, and store displays. I need to get in front of a younger group and around products like mine.

3. Get the bed risers. I had so many comments of the height of my booth and it was at the perfect eye level so no one had to hunch. Plus for me I have delicate items and it helped to prevent children reaching for fragile items.

4. Have a station for your packing materials. I had everything stored in a tote covered with a tablecloth. This looked nice but I felt like I was fumbling when I did get a purchase.

5. If your using new software (ex: Square) make sure you FULLY get to know the app. I went through about half the icons and thought I would be good but come to find out there will always be road bumps. Just learn the app fully you don't know what may happen. Trial test runs, ex: a regular purchase, adding discounts, test card swipes, manual amount purchase.

5. Have fun dammit! If your having fun that energy will attract customers.

6. Bring something to keep your hands busy. Bring something for your business to work on this will help you stay engaged without pressuring the customers.

... Read moreBuilding on what I learned from my *first craft show for the books*, I've realized there's so much more to prepping for these events than just setting up a pretty display. It's truly a learning curve, and every show teaches you something new. Here are some extra insights and tips I've gathered to help make your next craft show experience even smoother and more successful. Beyond Just Booth Height: Crafting an Inviting Display While my initial show taught me the genius of bed risers for eye-level engagement, an inviting booth goes deeper. Think about lighting – often overlooked, but good lighting can truly make your products sparkle and stand out, especially if the venue is dim. Battery-operated LED lights, string lights, or even a small spotlight can transform your space. Also, consider your branding. Does your booth tell a story? Use consistent colors, textures, and signage that reflect your unique style. I've found that having a clear, concise sign with my business name and what I sell helps immensely. Make sure there's a good flow for customers to browse, and don't overcrowd your table. Sometimes less is more, allowing each item to breathe and be appreciated. Deep Dive into Audience Research and Show Selection My realization that church craft shows might not be my primary audience was a huge takeaway. To avoid future mismatches, I now dedicate time to researching potential events. Look at the show's past vendors and attendee demographics. Is it an art fair, a handmade market, a vintage show, or a local festival? Each attracts a different crowd. Check social media for previous events – what kind of products were popular? What was the general vibe? Speaking to other vendors who have participated in a show you're considering can offer invaluable insights. This targeted approach helps ensure you're putting your unique creations in front of people who are genuinely interested and willing to spend. Pre-Show Prep: The Unsung Heroes of Success Before I even think about packing my car, there's a checklist I now swear by. First, inventory management: know exactly what you have, how many, and what it costs you. This makes pricing easier and helps with reordering. Speaking of pricing, make sure all your items are clearly priced. No one likes to ask, and some customers will walk away if they can't easily see prices. Have a variety of payment options ready – cash (with plenty of small bills for change), a fully charged payment app (like Square, after extensive practice!), and even a backup pen-and-paper system. Don't forget professional-looking packaging and business cards. A thoughtful package and a way for customers to find you online after the show can turn a one-time purchase into a loyal fan. Engaging with Customers Authentically It's easy to feel awkward or pushy, especially at your *first craft show*. My goal now is to be approachable without being overbearing. A simple "Hello, feel free to browse!" or "Let me know if you have any questions!" works wonders. If someone lingers, I might gently ask, "Are you looking for something special today?" or "I love hearing which piece catches people's eye!" Be ready to share the story behind your creations – people connect with passion and authenticity. And remember that "bring something to keep your hands busy" tip? It's gold. It makes you look engaged and productive, rather than just waiting for a sale, which can ironically attract more people. Post-Show Reflection: Learning and Growing After the adrenaline wears off, take time to reflect. What sold well? What didn't? Why? What feedback did you get? Did your booth layout work? Did your payment system run smoothly? I make notes for every show. This critical reflection helps refine your products, pricing, and presentation for the next event. Every show, successful or challenging, is a step forward in your entrepreneurial journey. Embrace the lessons, because they truly make your next 'first craft show' even better!
