Stick welding with 7024 jet rod (SMAW)

Hey fellow welders! Let's talk about one of my favorite electrodes for getting things done quickly and cleanly: the 7024 'jet rod'. If you're into stick welding (SMAW) and haven't given these a proper try, you're missing out on a real time-saver, especially for shop work where speed and appearance matter. I remember the first time I picked up a 7024. I was used to the more finicky 6010s and 7018s, which require a bit more technique and manipulation. The 7024, on the other hand, felt like cheating! It’s often called a 'drag rod' for a reason – you literally just drag it along the joint. This makes it incredibly user-friendly, even for those still building their stick welding skills. So, what makes the 7024 so special? It's a high-iron powder electrode with a thick flux coating. This flux coating does a fantastic job of creating a stable arc, providing a lot of shielding gas, and allowing for a super-fast deposition rate. This is why it's nicknamed 'jet rod' – it lays down metal quickly and smoothly, almost like butter. You can achieve really good-looking, flat, and often self-peeling slag welds, which is a huge bonus! Less chipping means more welding. I've found them particularly excellent for flat and horizontal fillet welds. Think about fabricating brackets, strengthening a workbench, or doing general repairs on thicker steel. If you need to fill a joint quickly and don't require deep penetration for highly critical applications, the 7024 is your go-to. I usually run them a bit hotter than I would a 7018, sometimes even pushing the upper end of the manufacturer's recommended amperage range to get that fluid puddle and fast travel speed. My personal tip? Don't try to manipulate it too much. Let the rod and the heavy flux coating do the work. Just maintain a consistent drag angle, keep your travel speed steady, and watch that molten puddle fill in beautifully. Also, ensure your base metal is clean. While 7024s are pretty forgiving, a clean surface always gives the best results. Now, it's not a miracle rod for every situation. You won't be doing overhead or vertical-up welds with a 7024; its heavy puddle just won't cooperate with gravity. For those positions, you'll still need your 7018s or 6010s. Also, for applications requiring very deep penetration or maximum strength in critical structures, other rods might be preferred. But for high-production, good-looking flat and horizontal welds, the 7024 is an absolute champion in my book.
