Imagine driving an electric car into an office building or condo early in the morning and walking up the elevator to work normally without wasting time looking for a charger, not waiting in line, and not having to plug it yourself. Because overhead, you have a small robot running along the ceiling rails, stopping in your car, and plugging in the charger cable automatically.

This is actually happening in many Chinese cities. The system uses a simple but powerful concept. The parking garage ceiling-mounted rails serve both as a path for the robot to move and as an electric power supply along the way. When an electric car is parked, the robot moves to that position, connects the charging head and starts the charging process automatically. Every parking compartment can become a charging point without installing each separate charger.

A key highlight of this system is the reduction in infrastructure costs, particularly in underground parking garages where rewiring to each parking compartment is costly and cumbersome; moving the lighting system up to the ceiling makes installation easier, saves space, and does not interfere with traffic inside the parking lot.

Although charging is AC Level 2, which is slower than DC fast charging, it is consistent with practical usage behavior. Cars parked in offices, shopping malls or apartments are often parked for hours anyway. Gradual charging is therefore more adequate and appropriate. It also reduces the burden on the electrical system as a whole.

Several Chinese companies, such as Li Auto, CGXi and Wawa Charging, are developing various forms of charging robot systems, both rail-running and floor-moving. Some analysts predict that by 2030, robots may play a role in charging new energy vehicles to 20% of the total in China, while some cities like Beijing have plans to install many units in hundreds of parking lots.
