The history of the Heigo Porsche 911, as told by Matt Ivanhoe of The Cultivated Collector

The Heigo 911 is a Group 4 rally ’78 SC that was brought to life by a man named Dieter Röscheisen, who built the car while he was an employee at Porsche. He raced it in rallies throughout nineteen eighty, racking up three wins for a total of six podiums, and he ended up having to sell it at the end of the season, but not before it had made an impact – this very car served as the blueprint for the one Walter Röhrl rallied on the world stage, and it essentially kickstarted Porsche’s SC RS program.

When the car changed hands, it went under the radar, secretly switching to a Rothmans livery and then disappearing all together, but in 2009, it was rediscovered by chance.

Remnants of a Heigo livery were found on a Rothmans Porsche that was rotting away, and Röschiesen confirmed that it was his car, retired after a lifetime of rallying. The Heigo 911 was then restored to its former glory, and now it’s a reminder of Röschiesen’s ambition, and how he self engineered his own success.

... Read moreAs someone who has always been drawn to automotive history, the story of the Heigo Porsche 911 truly resonates with me. It’s incredible how Dieter Röscheisen, an employee at Porsche, used the company’s resources and his passion to build such a remarkable rally car on a limited budget. The Heigo 911 wasn’t just a race car; it was a personal project born out of ambition and creativity, showing how determination can lead to innovations that impact an entire brand’s future. I find it particularly inspiring that this car served as the blueprint for Walter Röhrl’s rally car and essentially launched Porsche’s factory SC RS program. It’s a testament to how individual efforts can inspire and transform professional motorsport programs. The fact that the car went missing for decades, only to be rediscovered in a derelict state with a Rothmans livery, adds a layer of mystique and nostalgia. It reminds me of how many classic cars and meaningful pieces of automotive heritage may be hiding in plain sight, forgotten but waiting to be restored and appreciated again. Following the restoration process, with Röscheisen himself overseeing it to ensure period accuracy, highlights the importance of preserving the authenticity and legacy of such historic vehicles. This labor of love, which took years, is a compelling example of how passionate enthusiasts and caretakers can protect motorsport history for future generations. Owning or even just witnessing such a car must be a privilege, as it carries not only the triumphs of past races but also the spirit of innovation and dedication that defined an era of rally racing. Reading about this car prompted me to reflect on the relationships between car enthusiasts and their machines. For many of us, cars aren’t just objects; they’re reflections of our dreams, hard work, and creativity—much like Röscheisen’s experience building and racing the Heigo 911. This story motivates me to dig deeper into other lesser-known automotive legends and perhaps share those stories and their histories to keep the passion alive in the community.
