The NWS SPC (National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center) is our go-to for forecasting severe weather outbreaks, whether it's tornadoes, damaging winds, or large hail. Their 'Day 1 Convective Outlook' maps, like the one we saw for Dec 28, 2024, are essential tools for understanding potential hazards in the coming 24 hours. One of the most common questions I get is, 'What do these risk levels actually mean?' The chances of more widespread impacts increase here. Moderate (MDT): This is a serious concern! A Moderate (4/5) risk of severe weather, like the one projected for parts of the southeastern US, including cities like Jackson, MS, and Monroe, LA on Dec 28, implies widespread severe thunderstorms with several tornadoes and/or numerous damaging winds and/or large hail. Significant severe weather is likely. High (HIGH): This is the highest level, reserved for situations where a severe weather outbreak is expected to be widespread and extremely dangerous, often with long-track violent tornadoes or widespread damaging winds. This is an extremely rare forecast. Beyond the general convective outlook, the SPC also issues specific outlooks for different threats.
