This lake is insane🤯
You need to visit this lake at least once in your life!🤯
📍This is Crystal Lake in Michigan located in Benzie County. It’s one of the cleanest lakes in Michigan and is an oligotrophic lake - hence why it’s so clear.
There are plenty of shallow places to swim long the shore line, but the lake gets 165 feet deep further out😳
You can ride bikes around the lake as well or visit the adorable towns nestled on it like Beulah.
We did see RV spots available right on the lake, so keep that in mind, too!
Is Crystal Lake on your list?

After my unforgettable trip to Crystal Lake, Michigan, I have to share even more about why you absolutely need to add it to your travel list. Beyond its stunning clarity, which truly lives up to its 'oligotrophic' reputation – meaning it's nutrient-poor and incredibly clean – there's so much to explore around this northern Michigan gem. If you're into water activities, Crystal Lake is a paradise. While the article mentioned swimming, let me tell you, the shallow areas along the shoreline are perfect for families with kids or just waders. But if you're adventurous, don't be shy about venturing further out; the water stays refreshingly cool, even on a hot summer day. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and even sailing are incredibly popular here, and you'll find several local spots to rent equipment if you don't bring your own. The calm, clear waters make for an ideal day out on the lake. And for fishing enthusiasts, the lake is known for its trout and salmon, offering a different kind of relaxation. The biking trails are another highlight that deserves more attention. The Betsie Valley Trail, for instance, runs right alongside the lake and connects several charming towns. It’s a paved path, perfect for all skill levels, offering breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding forests. You can easily spend a whole morning cycling from Beulah to Frankfort, grabbing lunch, and cycling back. Speaking of towns, Beulah is adorable, with quaint shops and eateries right on the lake. But don't miss exploring Frankfort, just a short drive away. It boasts a beautiful lighthouse, a vibrant main street, and plenty of options for dining and ice cream. It's the perfect place to watch a sunset over Lake Michigan if you're willing to take a short detour. For those planning an extended stay, accommodation options abound. Beyond the RV spots mentioned, which are fantastic for lakeside access, you'll find numerous campgrounds nearby, offering everything from rustic tent sites to full hookup spots. Charming vacation rentals, from cozy cabins to larger homes, dot the shoreline and surrounding areas, perfect for a longer family getaway. Book well in advance, especially for summer! My best advice for visiting Crystal Lake, Michigan? Go in late spring or early fall to avoid the peak summer crowds, though summer offers the warmest swimming. Pack layers, as Michigan weather can be unpredictable. And definitely bring a good camera – the views, especially at sunrise or sunset, are absolutely spectacular. This isn't just a lake; it's a whole experience waiting to be discovered, and I promise, it's worth every moment.
