12 day Costa Rica Itinerary if you love adventure

So, you’re dreaming of an epic Costa Rica adventure vacation? Trust me, it’s one of the best decisions you’ll make! I just got back from an incredible 12-day trip, and while the itinerary I shared is a fantastic starting point, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some practical tips that really made our adventure smooth and unforgettable. First off, let’s talk wheels. The OCR mentioned picking up a 4x4 rental car at San Jose, and I cannot stress enough how crucial that was for navigating the diverse terrains of Costa Rica. Many of the roads, especially leading to hidden waterfalls or specific adventure tours outside main towns like La Fortuna or Monteverde, can be unpaved, rocky, or steep. Having that extra clearance and traction gave us so much freedom to explore off the beaten path without a second thought. Don't skimp on this; it's an investment in your adventure! When it comes to packing for a Costa Rica adventure, think layers and versatility. You’ll be going from humid rainforests to cooler cloud forests and potentially warm beaches. I found quick-dry clothing, a lightweight rain jacket (even in the dry season, sudden showers happen!), and good hiking shoes (waterproof if possible!) to be absolute lifesavers. Don't forget your swimwear for those hot springs and volcanic mud baths, and definitely bring a good pair of binoculars for wildlife spotting – those colorful birds and monkeys can be elusive but are so rewarding to see! I also packed a small daypack for hikes and a reusable water bottle. Booking tours in advance, especially for popular activities like ziplining in Monteverde or guided hikes around Arenal Volcano, is a smart move. We often booked a day or two ahead through our accommodations, which sometimes offered discounts or had preferred operators. This saved us time and ensured we got spots on our desired activities. For wildlife, consider hiring a local guide. They have an uncanny ability to spot creatures you’d never see on your own, enriching the experience immensely. We saw sloths, monkeys, toucans, and even a quetzal thanks to our guides! And speaking of wildlife, Costa Rica is a paradise! While you'll definitely encounter creatures in national parks, keep your eyes peeled everywhere. We saw monkeys just hanging out by the road and beautiful birds right from our hotel balcony. Early mornings and late afternoons are generally the best times for spotting animals. Finally, don't forget to fuel your adventures with delicious local food! "Casado" (a plate with rice, beans, plantains, salad, and your choice of meat or fish) became my go-to lunch – hearty and affordable.
