a magical childhood
childhood doesn’t have to cost a fortune to feel magical. 🤟🏽🐣
it’s the small, consistent moments that make the biggest impact. here are some ways to bring everyday magic into your home—without spending much at all:
💫🫡🙋🏽♀️🚸say “yes AND” instead of “no.”:
listen, i know this feels basic &&&& sometimes it’s easy to default to “no.” pay attention to yourself…
catch moments try turning it into a “yes &” moment instead.
• child: “can we make a spaceship out of this box?”
• you: overwhelmed, don’t really have the time but want to play & connect.
a straight no is fine but acknowledging the desire & leaning into the improv of life takes practice.
—acknowledge the desire & add some magic.
“yes!! that’s the perfect box for that. & i can help decorate it in about 20 minutes with stars! would you like to start now or wait for me to come through?”
this habit keeps their creativity alive & reminds you both you’re safe spaces for honesty & growth.
💫🚶🏽♀️🚶🚶♂️ family walks:
i’m overly bias here but goodness it’s nice. to know we are taking walks on our favorite trails multiple times a week. we will be together without devices ((exceptions: my husband & i often share headphones taking turns picking a playlist/audio book/podcast… with one another or one of the kids & them with one other. it’s like a mini date for us among others🤍)) we talk senses, watch plant cycles, hold hands & chat. learn about our community & navigate all sorts of conversations.
((personal space: our godson came to us when he was eleven. an ideal human. the perfect example of humility & living honestly. he now lives five minutes down the road & almost has a fully developed frontal lobe. i couldn’t be more honored to live in his orbit. walks with your teen/young adult hit different when life is so rapidly changing for them. this world is fast & a lot & so loud. teaching children how to slow down is a blessing for everyone it reaches.. if nothing else happens, please take more walks with your babies. once you’ve memorized your nearest bits, drive to new spaces & explore on foot together, incorporate public transportation where & when available. often & more.))
💫📚🏰🤖story adventures:
take their favorite book & act it out around the house. a couch becomes a pirate ship. the hallway turns into a forest. all you need is your imagination! allow your kids to see you be goofy. allow them to stem loudly in their home & learn the appropriate ways & times to try on new faces. lean into their fixations!
💫🌈🌻🌲 nature treasure hunts:
head outside with a list of “treasures” to find: a yellow leaf, a smooth rock, something yucky. it turns a simple walk into an adventure.
💫🪄🫙🧪diy magic potions:
grab some jars, water, food coloring, & glitter. let them mix & pour to create their own “potions.” bonus points if you tell a story about what each potion does or add items found on your adventure walk.
💫✨👀🌚 stargazing nights:
lay out blankets in the yard & watch the stars together. if you can’t see many stars, look for the moon. tell stories about what’s up there or make up your own constellations.
***bonus: we love the app Star Map! shows where the stars, planets & constellations are in accordance to your location. truly magic!!
💫🎶🥁👩🏾🎤 music moments:
put on a playlist of their favorite songs & have a dance party. or give them kitchen utensils as instruments & start a family band.
**put on a blink 182 music video in the background. anyone. they’re all gems to rock out to. 💎
💫🫢🕵️🧺🏡🏕️surprise picnics:
it doesn’t matter if it’s in the yard, on the living room floor, or at the park. pack up sandwiches & make it feel special with a fancy glass your kids never used!
💫👩🏽🏫🎨🎠 chalk magic:
use sidewalk chalk to create a pretend world outside—roads for their bikes, hopscotch, or even a castle.
💫❣️💌🤟🏽love notes in random places:
the classics stay winning! hide little notes in their lunchbox, under their pillow, or in their shoes. it’s a tiny reminder that they’re loved, even when you’re apart.
🧚🏽♀️🦹🏾♀️🧝🏽♀️🧙🏾♀️🤹🏽🦄🧞♀️🪄
::magic isn’t about big trips or expensive toys. it’s about saying “yes &” to the little things that make their world feel bigger, brighter, & more full of wonder. ✨
which idea will you try first? let me know in the comments!

You know, when I first started my parenting journey, the idea of a 'magical childhood' felt overwhelming. I pictured grand vacations and elaborate parties, things that frankly, felt out of reach financially and time-wise. But what I've learned, often through trial and error, is that true magic isn't found in expensive experiences, but in the simple, consistent moments we share. It's about weaving wonder into the fabric of daily life, without breaking the bank. For me, the biggest shift came from embracing the 'yes, AND' philosophy. It's so easy to say 'no' out of habit or exhaustion. But catching myself and trying to pivot to 'yes, AND we can make that spaceship after dinner!' or 'yes, AND let's find the biggest stick on our walk to be our sword!' has transformed our interactions. It teaches my kids that their ideas are valid and encourages their creativity. It’s not about giving in to every demand, but acknowledging their desire and finding a creative path forward, even a tiny one. Our family walks have become a cornerstone of this everyday magic. We don't just wander; we turn them into 'nature treasure hunts' (just like the article suggests!). Sometimes we have a list: find something rough, something smooth, a yellow leaf, a feather. Other times, we just let curiosity lead. Using apps like AllTrails has been fantastic for discovering new local paths, making each outing feel like a mini-exploration. And when we’re out, we often talk about what we see, what we hear, what we smell – it’s a full sensory experience that grounds us all. Stargazing nights are another favorite. Even if you don't have a clear, dark sky, just lying on a blanket and looking up at the moon or the few visible stars can be incredibly powerful. We love using the Star Map app; it literally points out constellations right above us! It turns a quiet moment into a shared lesson about the vastness of the universe. It’s those moments of shared awe that truly bind us together. I know life gets busy, and the thought of adding another 'thing' can feel daunting. But the beauty of these ideas is their simplicity. A 'surprise picnic' can be as easy as spreading a blanket on the living room floor with some sandwiches and juice. 'DIY magic potions' can be a jar of water, some leaves, and a sprinkle of glitter from the craft box. It's not about perfection; it's about presence. The image of a child looking over a stream, with 'WE'VE GOT THIS' overlaid, often comes to mind on those challenging days. It's a reminder that even when parenting feels tough, we are capable of creating these beautiful moments. These aren't just activities; they're opportunities to infuse everyday life with intention and love. Hiding a little love note in a lunchbox or under a pillow takes seconds but leaves a lasting impression, a tiny spark of magic in their day. It’s about building a narrative for our children that says, 'You are loved, you are seen, and the world around you is full of wonder.' It’s my personal belief that these cherished memories, built on small acts of magic, are truly priceless. They nurture a child's heart, calm the mind, and leave both parent and child feeling content, just like that beautiful affirmation I saw: 'My heart is thankful, my mind is calm, and my soul is content.' It’s about cultivating that feeling, one small magical moment at a time.
