Glacier National Park

📍Guide: Visiting Glacier National Park

🕛: 4 nights+ as park is huge

⛺️ Camping Rec: Apgar Campground on Lake McDonald (inside park and close to visitor center/ town) or if sold out, Glacier Campground (right outside of park but close to town)

🥾Trails: Grinnell Glacier Trail (11 miles RT but so worth it), Hidden Lake Overlook (2.7 miles RT) and Avalanche Lake (6 miles RT)

📷: Must do: Drive Going-to-the-Sun Road end to end (permits required via Recreation.Gov)

✨Best July - September. Book reservations and permits 6 months in advance

✨If not successful on permits in advance, try again once you are there for daily permits the night before, this is how we got ours

✨🐻 Country: Always Carry Bear Spray, Know Bear Food Storage practices and be aware of how to respond when encountering bears on trail

✨It can be overwhelming with all the things “to do”, but save a half a day to paddleboard, kayak or hang around on Lake McDonald and check out the cute town

✨ Weather can shift quickly: Always carry the 10 Essentials for Hiking

... Read moreGlacier National Park is truly a gem for nature lovers and adventure seekers, offering a vast landscape that merits a longer stay of at least four nights. One of the park’s highlights is the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, a scenic drive that provides breathtaking views of towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and abundant wildlife like bighorn sheep and moose. Because of its popularity, securing permits up to six months in advance through Recreation.Gov is essential, but daily permits may also be available if you’re willing to try the night before. For hiking enthusiasts, the Grinnell Glacier Trail is a challenging yet rewarding 11-mile round trip, showcasing stunning glacial views and diverse ecosystems. Shorter options like the Hidden Lake Overlook and Avalanche Lake offer spectacular scenery for all skill levels. It’s common to spot wildlife, so always carry bear spray and understand food storage safety to protect both yourself and the animals. Camping inside the park is best experienced at Apgar Campground on Lake McDonald, which is conveniently near the visitor center and town. If sites fill up early, Glacier Campground just outside the park is a close alternative. For those interested in water activities, Lake McDonald provides ideal spots for paddleboarding and kayaking, perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking. Visitors should also be prepared for ever-changing mountain weather by packing the 10 Essentials for Hiking, including layers, navigation, emergency supplies, and hydration. Additionally, the park offers excellent star gazing experiences, with clear skies away from city lights illuminating the night. Overall, visiting Glacier National Park requires some preparation but rewards you with unforgettable landscapes, exciting wildlife encounters, and peaceful natural escapes. Whether driving the iconic road, trekking to glaciers, or paddling on pristine lakes, this national park is an adventure that lingers in memory long after the trip ends.
