Lion Dancers Have Taken Over NYC Chinatown!

To end the 15-day Lunar New Year festivities, lion dancers paraded around Chinatown and entered businesses to bring them good luck for the new year! 🧧 It’s known as Super Saturday! As the finale of the 15-day Lunar New Year festivities, the streets are filled with the lively sounds of drums and cymbals, illuminating the celebratory atmosphere. One of the highlights was watching over twenty lion dance groups parade through the neighborhood. These lion dances are not just performances but carry deep cultural meanings—they are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. Watching the lions enter shops and scatter cabbage, a symbol of wealth, to spread fortune to business owners was truly captivating. In addition to the performances, the event offered a wonderful opportunity to savor authentic Chinese delicacies. I tried a unique Chinese donut called the “cow tongue” pastry, which was surprisingly sweet and delicious. Dining at King’s Kitchen introduced me to clay pot rice with chicken, spare ribs, and even frog legs, which tasted remarkably like chicken. Another meaningful moment was visiting a local Buddhist temple where visitors could pick their fortune by donating a dollar, adding a spiritual layer to the celebrations. The bustling Asian markets were vibrant with fresh produce, tea eggs, and other traditional foods, which reminded me of the rich cultural heritage shared during the Lunar New Year. What made this visit especially meaningful was exploring the festival alongside a Chinese friend, who helped me understand customs like the giving of red envelopes called “lai see” in Cantonese or “hongbao” in Mandarin. These envelopes symbolize good luck and prosperity for the year ahead. If you find yourself in New York for the Lunar New Year, I highly recommend marking your calendar for Super Saturday in Chinatown. It offers a colorful, immersive glimpse into Chinese New Year traditions with lively lion dances, cultural rituals, and delicious food. Experience the warmth and joy of these celebrations firsthand—you won’t regret it!
