Moderate day hike in the Ozarks
I absolutely love a good hike & I’m always trying to find the best ones close to home. The Big Bluff Goat Trail has been on my list for years & when we stayed in Compton for a little NYE getaway I knew we had to go!
⭐️Overall rating: 4/5:
👍Pros: easy to find, gorgeous view, accessible even if you don’t have a 4wd vehicle, great half day hike, branches off to other trails, would be amazing in the fall when the leaves are changing.
🤔Cons: majority of the hike is boring, lots of hills (the worst part is going up them all back to the parking lot), not kid friendly (although we carried our 1 year old in his hiking backpack the whole time I wouldn’t recommend), not for those scared of hikes because you’re right on the edge of the bluff.
📒Notes: if it’s been raining wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty because the trail can get very muddy. Bring a snack because it ’s over 6 miles round trip. I did see someone on google say they saw wild boar, we didn’t see any wild life, but this did make me cautious 😅
Let me know if you try this hike!

After my recent adventure on the Big Bluff Goat Trail, I wanted to share a bit more for anyone considering this iconic Ozarks hike. While the original post covered my immediate thoughts, there's so much more to unpack about what makes this trail truly special—and what to prepare for! First off, let's talk about those views. The main draw, without a doubt, is standing on that rocky bluff, gazing out over the vast river valley of the Buffalo National River. It's truly a sight to behold, especially when the forested hills are bathed in a sunlit valley glow. I remember reaching the edge and just feeling so small, yet completely invigorated. The sheer scale of the bluffs here in Arkansas is something you have to experience to believe. If you've seen "Big Bluff Goat Trail photos" online, trust me, it's even more impressive in person. This isn't just another walk in the woods; it’s a journey to an unforgettable panorama that captures the essence of the Ozarks. Now, about the hike itself. I mentioned that the majority of the trail can feel a bit "boring" before you reach the payoff. It's a real forest trek, often winding through dense woods with a fair amount of uphill and downhill sections. Don't underestimate the hills, especially on the way back up to the parking lot! I found myself wishing I'd brought trekking poles for some of those steeper inclines. It’s definitely a workout, but knowing the reward that awaits keeps you going. This part of the Ozarks hiking experience is less about constant scenic overlooks and more about the journey through nature, building anticipation for the grand reveal of the Big Bluff. For those considering bringing little ones, I really stand by my initial thought: it's not truly kid-friendly, despite us carrying our one-year-old. The terrain can be challenging, muddy if it's rained, and being right on the edge of the bluff requires constant vigilance. If you're looking for family-friendly Ozarks adventures, there are other fantastic options along the Buffalo River that offer easier access to stunning views without the same level of peril. A few more practical tips I picked up: Make sure your shoes are trail-ready and waterproof if there's any chance of rain – that mud can be no joke! And yes, a substantial snack and plenty of water for the 6+ mile round trip are non-negotiable. While we didn't spot any wild boar ourselves, it's a good reminder to be aware of your surroundings; this is true wilderness. The trail does "branch off to other trails" as I noted, so if you're an experienced hiker looking for an even longer adventure, do your research beforehand on the connecting routes. Finally, while my trip wasn't in the fall, I can only imagine how truly breathtaking this hike would be when the leaves are changing. The contrast of the vibrant fall colors against the towering bluffs would be absolutely magical. But honestly, any time you can make it to this incredible spot in Arkansas, it's a hike worth taking for those unparalleled views.
