I LOVE to travel. & I’ve been fortunate enough to travel once a year to some amazing places. I don’t come from money & am VERY budget conscious. So here’s what I do to keep costs down & how you can afford to travel too!
•let your flight dictate your destination: 11 months in advance set alerts on google flights to various dates & places you’d be interested in visiting. Keep an eye on when prices drop & when they take a significant dip that’s when you bite the bullet & buy them!
•be willing to drive to a bigger airport: I don’t live close to an international hub, the closest ones are several hours away. BUT when I found $350 round trip flights to Iceland I absolutely drove the 5 hours to take advantage of that deal!
•get a credit card with travel rewards points: we haven’t bought airline tickets in several years ever since we started using the chase sapphire credit card. **only do this if you are responsible with money & can pay it off every month**
•use Airbnb or booking.com for places to stay: in all my searches these two sites still tend to have the best deals on accommodations. You must read through allllll the reviews though before making any decisions.
•use Priceline for car rental: most people don’t know this secret & I’m kinda scared to put the word out in fear it’ll become too popular, but I’ve used Priceline in multiple states & once in Scotland & they’ve always had the cheapest prices!
•buy snacks at your destination & only eat out once a day: I know this one is hard for the foodies, but it’ll save you a good $50-60 per day if you only eat out once!
... Read moreAs someone who absolutely loves to travel and has been lucky enough to explore amazing places every year, I know the struggle of wanting to see the world without a huge budget. I've learned so many tricks to keep costs down, and I'm excited to share even more ways you can make your travel dreams a reality!
Beyond setting those essential flight alerts, flexibility is your greatest superpower. I once saved hundreds of dollars on a trip to Southeast Asia just by being willing to shift my departure date by two days! Always check prices for a few days before and after your ideal dates. Another pro-tip for finding those elusive cheap flights: always browse in incognito or private mode. Airlines sometimes use cookies to track your searches and might subtly increase prices if they see you repeatedly looking at the same route. Clearing your cookies or using incognito mode can sometimes help you see the lowest available fares. Don't shy away from budget airlines either, but always read the fine print about baggage fees and seat selection to avoid surprises.
When it comes to accommodation, while Airbnb and Booking.com are my go-to's, I've also discovered that sometimes local guesthouses offer incredible value and a more authentic experience. For solo travelers or those looking to stretch their budget furthest, don't underestimate hostels! Many now offer private rooms with amenities comparable to hotels, often with lively common areas to meet fellow adventurers. Traveling during the shoulder season (just before or after peak tourist times) or off-season can also drastically reduce accommodation prices, letting you stay longer for less. And remember, reading reviews isn't just about avoiding bad experiences; it's also about finding hidden gems and ensuring the location is safe and convenient, especially if you're exploring a new city where you might be out and about until late.
Once you arrive at your destination, getting around cheaply is key to cutting costs. Embrace public transportation! Buses, trams, and subways are not only significantly cheaper than taxis but also offer a fantastic way to experience local life. I love feeling like a local when I navigate a new city's metro system. For activities, look for free walking tours (tip generously if you enjoy it!), explore local parks, or seek out natural wonders. Some of my most memorable experiences have come from hiking along a scenic bay or exploring a rocky cliffside, completely free of charge. Many cities also offer free museum days or affordable city passes if you plan on visiting multiple attractions.
Lastly, smart packing can save you a surprising amount. Try to pack light enough to only bring a carry-on bag. Checked baggage fees can really add up, especially if you're taking multiple flights. I've mastered the art of rolling clothes and using travel-sized toiletries to fit everything I need. These little hacks really allow me to stretch my travel budget further and continue to travel the world without constantly worrying about expenses. Happy travels, and I hope these tips help you cut costs on your next adventure!
