full and partial awakenings
PERMANENT AND PARTIAL KUNDALINI AWAKENINGS
"There are two types of Kundalini awakenings—permanent and partial ones. The difference between the two needs to be correctly understood to know where you are in your process of Spiritual Evolution so that you can know what to do to progress further. In a permanent awakening, the Kundalini energy rises from the base of the spinal column (Muladhara Chakra), moving through Sushumna and into the brain until reaching the top of the head (Sahasrara). Along its path lie the Three Granthis, the psychic "knots" that obstruct the flow of the Kundalini. Each of them needs to be pierced systematically for a full awakening to occur. Since it forms part of the science and philosophy of Yoga and Tantra, I will discuss the Three Granthis in detail in the section dedicated to their practices. If the awakened Kundalini rises with enough force, it will break the Cosmic Egg at the top of the head. Once the Cosmic Egg breaks, a nectar-like liquid substance, Ambrosia, pours over the body downwards from the top of the head, invigorating the Seventy-Two Thousand Nadis of the Body of Light (Figure 7). This constitutes a "permanent" awakening since the Kundalini never drops back down to Muladhara. Instead, it stays in the centre of the brain for the rest of your life. In a partial awakening, however, the Kundalini never rises to the brain centre or at least doesn't generate enough power to untie the Three Granthis and rise to the top of the head to blow open the Cosmic Egg. Instead, the Kundalini energy drops back down to Muladhara only to repeat the process of rising in the future. The Kundalini wants to rise to the top of the head, and it will continue to attempt to do so until it unties all Three Granthis and achieves this goal. In my journey of exploring Kundalini awakenings, I've learned that understanding the distinction between full (permanent) and partial awakenings is vital for anyone pursuing spiritual growth. The concept of the Three Granthis—Rudra, Vishnu, and Brahma Granthis—acting as psychic knots blocking energy flow truly resonated with me. Each knot represents specific attachments or limitations: the Rudra Granthi is linked to physical and emotional attachments, Vishnu Granthi to ego and mental limitations, and Brahma Granthi to spiritual bondage. Experience taught me that a partial awakening can feel intense yet incomplete, as the Kundalini energy rises but retreats before fully piercing these knots. It creates cycles of spiritual breakthroughs followed by periods of rest or even confusion, which I found were moments to deepen self-awareness rather than discouragement. When the Kundalini power breaks the Cosmic Egg at the Sahasrara chakra, often described as the crown of the head, it releases an ambrosial nectar showering the body, invigorating thousands of subtle energy channels called Nadis. This sensation can be both physically healing and deeply blissful, signaling a permanent awakening where the spiritual energy remains active within the brain center. I realized that patience and dedicated practice in Yoga and Tantra are essential to progress. Systematic work on untying each Granthi through meditation, breathwork, and mantra chanting helped me clear blockages gradually. Joining supportive communities or guided teachings also provided valuable context and encouragement. If you are experiencing fluctuating Kundalini energy, remember it’s part of the process. The energy’s persistent attempts to rise indicate your potential for full awakening. Listening to your body, honoring your pace, and maintaining consistent spiritual practice can lead you beyond partial arousals toward enduring transformation. Understanding this phenomenon not only deepens spiritual evolution but also aligns you with ancient yogic science, encouraging holistic wellbeing. I encourage anyone curious to explore this path earnestly but mindfully, always seeking balance between awakening and integration.
