When I don't succeed in staying calm, the goal is to return to my "thinking brain" as quickly as I can and turn my attention to validating their feelings & making things right. Bonus if I succeed in not hating myself for the next 3 days. 🥺🫂❤️#CycleBreaker #IntergenerationalTrauma #StopHittingYourKids #ConnectionBeforeCorrection #ResponsiveParenting
Parenting isn't always easy, and moments of frustration can happen even to the most patient caregivers. What truly matters is how we respond after those moments. I’ve found that the key to moving forward lies in shifting from an emotional reaction to engaging the 'thinking brain.' This means taking a deep breath, acknowledging the situation calmly, and consciously choosing to validate my child’s feelings instead of focusing on the outburst. One helpful tactic I use is to apologize sincerely when I realize I’ve raised my voice or spoken harshly. Saying things like, “I was wrong, and it’s okay,” or “I shouldn’t have talked to you like that” models accountability and kindness. It can sometimes take me a little while to fully calm down, but aiming not to beat myself up for days afterward helps me stay compassionate towards myself and more present for my child. Using gentle and kind words makes a big difference in repairing connection. It’s important to remember that children often need reassurance — phrases such as, “Are you okay, buddy?” or “Help me understand how you feel” can open communication and strengthen trust. Emphasizing connection before correction fosters a safer and more responsive parenting style. The journey to breaking intergenerational cycles of trauma and adopting non-violent methods can be challenging, but each effort counts. Being intentional about our responses, practicing mindfulness, and prioritizing emotional validation are actionable steps that gradually transform parent-child relationships. Remember, it’s a process. Celebrate each moment of progress, no matter how small, and lean into the support of communities committed to these values.
