Thrift tip Friday 💫✨ #thrifting
You know, one of my absolute favorite things to hunt for at places like Goodwill is a fantastic tray! Whether it's a decorative serving tray to style a coffee table, a sturdy one for entertaining, or a super practical Lazy Susan for the kitchen, they truly can elevate a space or make organizing so much easier. I've found some of my most cherished home decor pieces and functional items in the tray aisle, and I'm convinced it's an often-overlooked treasure trove. When I'm rummaging through the shelves, my first tip is always to check the material. Is it solid wood, elegant metal, beautiful ceramic, or maybe a unique vintage plastic? Each material has its own charm and durability. For wooden trays, I'm looking for sturdy construction and minimal warping or deep cracks. A little wear can add character, but you don't want something falling apart. Metal trays are great, but inspect them for excessive rust or dents that might make them wobbly. I once found the most beautiful teak Lazy Susan for just a few bucks – a total steal! It just needed a good clean and a little wood oil to bring it back to life. Beyond just looks, always inspect the condition thoroughly. Check the handles to ensure they're secure, and if it has little feet, make sure they're all present and even. For those fantastic Lazy Susans, give them a good spin to make sure the mechanism works smoothly and doesn't get stuck or squeak. There's nothing worse than getting home with a great find only to discover it doesn't function as it should! These trays are perfect for organizing spices in your pantry, displaying candles and small decor on a coffee table, or even serving drinks when friends come over. Don't forget to check the edges for chips, especially on those fun + funky bowls and unique hot pads you might find nearby – a complete set, even if mismatched, can be a real gem. If a tray isn't in perfect condition, don't write it off! A little DIY can go a long way. A scuffed wooden tray can be sanded and repainted, or even decoupaged with pretty paper. A metal tray with some wear might look amazing with a coat of spray paint. Think about its potential! These small projects can transform a bargain find into a personalized piece for your home. While you're hunting for trays, keep an eye out for vintage cookbooks. They often have the best classic recipes and sometimes even charming illustrations that double as kitchen decor. Pairing a cool old cookbook with a rustic wooden tray and some funky bowls creates such a cozy, curated vibe. It’s all about seeing the potential beyond the current display and knowing what to look for that truly makes thrifting so rewarding. Happy hunting, fellow thrifters!
