think I'm bringing back my wigwear
Hey Wig Fam! 👋 If you're anything like me, you've probably experienced the dreaded 'crunchy wig' dilemma. You know, that stiff, unnatural feeling that makes your beautiful WigWear look less than fabulous. I've been there, and trust me, it's frustrating! But after years of trial and error, I've finally cracked the code on how to prevent and even revive those crunchy strands. So, if you're battling a stiff wig, read on for my personal hacks! First off, let's talk about why wigs get crunchy. It’s often a combination of factors. Product buildup is a huge culprit – using too much hairspray, gel, or heavy mousses can leave a sticky residue that hardens. Excessive heat styling, especially on synthetic wigs, can literally melt and stiffen the fibers, leading to that undesirable crunchy texture. Poor quality wigs or those made with heat-sensitive synthetic fibers are also more prone to crunchiness. And sometimes, it’s just a lack of proper moisture and conditioning that leaves the hair feeling dry and stiff. My secret weapon against crunchiness starts with a good wash day. I always use a sulfate-free shampoo and a rich, hydrating conditioner specifically designed for wigs – whether it’s human hair or synthetic. For synthetic wigs, I often do a fabric softener soak (yes, fabric softener!) to restore softness. Just dilute a small amount in cool water, let the wig soak for about 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. It works wonders! Remember to always detangle gently from the ends upwards with a wide-tooth comb to avoid damage. When it comes to styling, less is definitely more. I opt for lightweight mousse or a leave-in conditioner spray for added moisture and frizz control. I completely avoid traditional hairsprays on my synthetic WigWear; they are, in my experience, the biggest cause of that stiff, crunchy texture. If I need hold, I’ll use a wig-friendly setting spray very sparingly. And heat? I try to keep it to a minimum. If I have to use heat, I always apply a heat protectant spray and use the lowest possible temperature setting. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the fibers and preventing them from becoming brittle and crunchy. For those truly crunchy wigs that seem beyond hope, don't despair! I've had success with steaming. A hand steamer can work wonders to relax synthetic fibers and remove stiffness. Just hold the steamer a few inches away and gently brush through the hair as you steam. Afterward, apply a light silicone-based serum or a wig-specific detangling spray to restore softness and shine. Another trick is a deep conditioning treatment. For human hair wigs, a regular hair mask works wonders. For synthetic, a mix of leave-in conditioner and a few drops of argan oil can help restore some elasticity. Maintaining your WigWear goes beyond just styling. Proper storage, like on a wig stand, helps maintain its shape and prevents tangling. Regular, gentle brushing also prevents knots from forming and keeps the fibers smooth. My goal with my WigWear is always to look natural and feel comfortable, and avoiding that dreaded crunchiness is a huge part of achieving that. What are your best tips for a soft wig? Share below!
