I am a printmaker today

I've always been drawn to art forms that combine technical skill with boundless creativity, and that's precisely what printmaking offers! When I first delved into printmaking, I quickly realized it's much more than just drawing and painting; it's a fascinating journey of transformation. At its core, printmaking is about transferring an image from one surface (the matrix) to another (like paper or fabric). What truly captivated me was the tactile nature of it – feeling the resistance of the block as I carve, the smooth glide of the ink, and that moment of anticipation before pulling the first print. It's truly magical and feels so different from just brushing paint on a canvas. One of the most exciting aspects is the sheer variety of techniques. While I started with linocut, which is fantastic for bold, graphic designs, I've since explored so much more. There's woodcut, of course, with its beautiful grain textures, and monotype, which is like painting directly onto a plate and then transferring it, creating unique, one-of-a-kind prints. But then you also have intaglio methods like etching and drypoint, where you incise lines into metal plates. The way the ink settles into those grooves creates such rich, velvety lines – it's a completely different aesthetic! And let's not forget lithography, which uses the repulsion of oil and water, or screenprinting, which is incredibly versatile for both fine art and textiles. Each method has its own distinct charm and challenges, making the creative process endlessly engaging. What sets printmaking apart from other art media, like painting, is its unique blend of artistic vision and craftsmanship. With painting, you create a singular image directly. In printmaking, you're designing for multiples. You create the matrix, and that matrix allows you to produce an edition of prints, each slightly unique due to the hands-on process, but all stemming from the same original design. This 'multiplicity' doesn't diminish its value; instead, it makes art more accessible, allowing more people to own a piece of original artwork. I remember experimenting with a new DANGEN paper for a small edition, and the way it absorbed the ink was just perfect, giving the prints an unexpected depth. The process itself often involves working in reverse or mirror image, which is a wonderful mental exercise and adds another layer of complexity and satisfaction. It forces you to think differently about composition and form. Beyond just creating beautiful images, printmaking has a powerful purpose. Historically, it was crucial for disseminating information, from religious texts to political cartoons. Today, its purpose is just as varied – it allows artists to tell stories, explore social commentary, or simply share their unique perspective with a wider audience. It democratizes art. Even in India, there's a vibrant tradition of printmaking, with artists pushing boundaries and preserving ancient techniques, showing how this art form resonates across cultures and time. For me, the purpose is deeply personal: it's a meditative practice, a way to slow down, connect with materials, and find immense joy in the physical act of creation. It's a rewarding journey from concept to final print, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
