The Fourth of July is often celebrated with fireworks, barbecues, and patriotic festivities, but it’s also a moment to reflect on the deeper history of America’s foundation. While the holiday marks independence and freedom, it's important to remember that the country’s creation involved countless individuals whose contributions have historically been ignored or undervalued. Many of these builders—especially Black Americans—worked tirelessly without recognition or fair compensation. Growing up, my family always emphasized the significance of understanding history from multiple perspectives. During Independence Day celebrations, we would share stories not just about the founding fathers but also about the enslaved people and laborers whose work was integral to building the nation’s infrastructure and economy. This broader view helps build a more inclusive sense of pride and appreciation for the country’s complex history. Unity and freedom remain central themes of July 4th, but honoring those who laid the groundwork reminds us to continue striving for equity and justice. This memorial approach shows respect and ensures that the narrative of America’s creation is truthful and complete. Participating in community events that highlight Black history and the stories of overlooked contributors can deepen our understanding and commitment to a more inclusive future. As we celebrate, let's remember that freedom and unity require ongoing work and recognition of all who contributed to the nation’s legacy.
