I always keep a small, battery-powered NOAA weather radio handy. It's a lifesaver for getting updates on the outage duration and emergency broadcasts, without draining my phone. And speaking of phones, I try to conserve battery by putting it on airplane mode, only checking for essential updates. When it comes to food and water, my pantry now includes a stock of non-perishable items that don't require cooking, like canned goods, crackers, and protein bars. Don't forget a manual can opener! For water, I always keep several gallons of bottled water. If an outage is predicted, I fill up my bathtub – it's a great emergency reservoir for flushing toilets or non-drinking needs. And what about keeping busy and comfortable without electricity? Those hours can drag! I’ve found that a deck of cards, board games, or a good old-fashioned book can be a real mood booster. Instead of staring at a dark screen, we light candles (safely!) and gather for quiet conversations or storytelling. For warmth, layering blankets and sleeping bags is far more effective than trying to generate heat in an unsafe way. If it’s summer, opening windows for cross-ventilation and staying hydrated are key. Being throughly prepared today for tomorrow’s uncertainties truly makes a difference.
