Hualian 🤍

Hey everyone, Finnley here again! After my initial intro, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what makes Hualian cosplay so special to me and my boyfriend, Kas. For those unfamiliar, Hualian refers to Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, the iconic couple from 'Heaven Official's Blessing' (TGCF). Bringing these characters to life isn't just about the costumes; it's about embodying their beautiful and complex relationship. Cosplaying Xie Lian, in particular, has been such a journey. His gentle strength, resilience, and compassion are traits I truly admire. One of the biggest learning curves for me has been perfecting the makeup and wig styling to capture his ethereal look. Xie Lian's pristine white robes and the delicate details, like his white veil, require a lot of attention. I remember spending hours trying to get the draping just right for a photoshoot, ensuring every fold looked natural, especially when Kas, as Hua Cheng, was adjusting the white veil in some of our shots – those little interactions really bring the characters to life! It’s all about those subtle nuances that fans recognize and appreciate. And speaking of Kas as Hua Cheng, he's absolutely incredible. His dedication to capturing Hua Cheng's fierce protectiveness and devotion is what makes our Hualian cosplay feel so authentic. We often discuss how to best convey their dynamic, whether it's through a shared glance, a comforting touch while he's *sitting on a wall and holding my hand*, or even just the way he carries his signature *red umbrella*. Posing as a duo is a whole different ball game than solo cosplay, but it's incredibly rewarding when you see the magic unfold in photos. Being a New England cosplayer also comes with its unique charm. We're lucky to have some fantastic local conventions like Anime Boston, Fan Expo, and Conneticon. These events are not just places to showcase our hard work but also incredible opportunities to connect with fellow fans and artists. Finding picturesque locations for our shoots is another adventure! We often look for spots with lush greenery or historical architecture that can double as a 'garden setting' reminiscent of the TGCF world. It’s amazing what hidden gems you can find right in your own backyard in New England if you look closely. For anyone new to cosplay, especially duo cosplays, my biggest advice is to start with characters you genuinely love and connect with. The passion will shine through! Don't be afraid to experiment with your makeup and wig styling – YouTube tutorials are your best friend! And most importantly, enjoy the process. Cosplay is about creativity, expression, and building community. I'm always learning and striving to improve, and I'd love to hear your tips or experiences too.
